MMS lightweight *very

Post by dinglem »

These MMS cars were quite a thing over in the UK, and having come across a few now, and having seen them in period UK racing mags being used by top drivers such as Jason Varley I always keep an eye out for them. A couple of months ago an online RC friend of mine messaged me saying he had a very chopped up gold pan which he thought I might be interested in.

He was right.

As a result of that message I now have another MMS-lightened car to work over. This one has had the side plates cut right down as per the Jamie Booth Euro's car as well as significant nose plate trimming. Over in the UK in 1985 and 1986 these lightweight cars were a real thing, due to 5minute races on muddy grass and 1200's..... making the 5 minute mark was a challenge in itself, so any weight-saving was always going to prove beneficial.

I have four of these MMS chassis cars now, and all have slightly different machining. This one is unusual as the motor plate has also been worked over, which even my red MMS car doesn't have. The chassis, nose and motor plate is a very light gold anno, and although it has low sidewalls it is surprisingly rigid with a luxurious flex if pushed hard. It is very straight though, even though it has a nice, used patina.

My plan for this car is to fit a McAllister lowering kit to is, short Brimod shocks all round and then use it as my practice car. That will mean on the grass field opposite my house and most likely for a bit of tarmac/carpark running whenever suits. The rear bulkhead has been chopped a little - just nice period touches all over it.

I have just restored a Demon 2DH speedo and that is already in it, and I also was very fortunate indeed to stumble across an ex-team Brimod RC10 bodyshell painted in their typical black and yellow paint scheme. This shell is a Demon Dart - very low slung and unusual. I only know of 4 examples of this shell including my own, one of which sits on the car belonging to Nick Adams himself - now residing with Ian Diboll. Along with the shell came an unusual RC10 ribbed gear cover (see separate thread) which nobody seems to have been able to ID on here. Jamie Booth tells me it was a Demon offering, and Ian Diboll confirmed that Nick did indeed offer his own variation of these.

Pretty cool anyway. I will post up a few more pictures as it comes together, but i won't be changing much on it. I will be retaining the black and yellow Brimod theme for sure! 8)

What sides ? Must have been pretty lucky to survive all these years without any nose support.

I am kind of holding off posting any proper pics from the top showing the chassis or the shell until it is a little more complete but i have to admit is it proper cool looking 8) The bodyshell shape is really quite smart - much better than I anticipated anyway.

Whoever owned this didn't crash very much i don't think, judging by how straight it is. No nose bars. It does flex, but not a huge amount - quite surprised by that in fact.

With the trimmed sides and nose plate it reminds me a lot of Jamie B's car from the 1986 Euro Champs A Final - the only 2wd to qualify.

1460g is the target, which is what his car is listed as weighing.

Looks like he picked up some additional caster in that nose too

I actually cross-checked mine against a complete RC10 nose piece i have here and the angle is pretty much spot on. Considering how good Jamie was i bet he barely crashed with that car... although the whopping bumper added leverage i suppose!
