Carbon Fiber filament

Post by RichieRich »

I see some of you a practically printing full cars with your printers. I'm wondering if anyone has tried any of the carbon fiber filaments? I realize in theory, it should make parts stronger and less flexible. I printed some 1.9 in Bruiser wheels with the proper offset to get the front and track widths equal. I used esun PLA+. I think that should be fine but if I were to print some rear RC10 suspension mounts, would it be better to use a carbon fiber filament?

PLA works well for wheels as long as your in a cool climate or don't leave them in the car in the sun , the CF filaments have two advantages , firstly it stiffens the plastic and second it improves layer bonding but it's not miraculous , you should still use a good plastic .
PLA is generally one of the stiffer materials you will print with but it's brittle and adding CF to it really only has a cosmetic affect .
A lot of people like CF PETG , it's more shock resistant than PLA and nearly any printer can print it , personally I've not tried the CF PETG , I hate PETG and virtually never use it so I'm not really into going there .
The real miracles start happening with CF Nylon , it's my go to material for durable parts for RC cars .
The one thing you will definitely need with any CF filament is a hardened nozzle , it will eat brass nozzles fast , I tried it and it took about 1.5 hours printing on an old slow printer to totally destroy a brass nozzle , I thought it would take longer but no , you really do need a hardened nozzle :!:
If a jobs not worth doing then its certainly not worth doing well.
A problem shared is a problem halved but an advantage shared is no advantage at all.

and a hardened extruder as well... The brass feeders don't last long with fiber filaments...
I buy kits to build and ru(i)n them :-)
