I was thinking.... What about Van's invent? I know he's not responding to emails but maybe if we team up for a group order then someone could send an email in the forum's name and then maybe he's going to react? If is getting an order for 50-100 bodies... I'd buy a whole bunch if we could get him to make them, that's for sure...

Back when we made the last big push, that for the most part is what we did. I emailed and called mentioning that we wanted to do a large order.... I can't remember the exact number, but it was like 40 to 45 bodies. I mentioned that I represented a group of enthusiast, ie. the forum.

Still NADA.

Feel free to go for it. Who knows, maybe almost a year later, they will listen.

Depends.
(Disclaimer: I'm not a copyright lawyer and being in the UK we do have different copyright laws but this is my understanding of the law.)

Technically yes it is illegal to reproduce the original bodies, especially if Associated are still making them as you are taking profit from them. Selling repros as Associated RC10 shells would be the fastest way to attract the attention of their lawyers.

The proper legal way would be to buy the moulds off Associated and also the rights to reproduce them. This would then give you the rights to sell them as Protech bodies for the RC10.

Then again making a body to fit the RC10 is perfectly legal in whatever design you want  as long as you don't claim it's made by anyone else but yourself. 'Designing' a body and calling it for example the Probuggy would be perfectly legal.

It then all gets a bit vague. Making a replica 'based on' the Protech would probably be okay as long as you don't make any reference to the Protech at all. This is how Proline made the Toyota FJ40 until they lost the licence, then it reappeared as the Bushwhacker with all references to Toyota removed. The vague area would be using the Protech name to sell the bodies, which is the obvious way to sell them, although the numbers we are talking about here are unlikely to attract the attention of AEs lawyers.

Yeah. Seems they should have taken care of those orders first. I have a couple of viper bodies on backorder since March. The protech II I just ordered has been shipped according to Tower. I'm really curious to see what kind of tag it comes with. Either the old AE american flag type or the newer blue and white label.

I got the body today. It's got the old style Team Associated tag with the Cadillac Ave address. It's labeled "PROTECK II". :D It must have been some old stock hiding in the warehouse somewhere. It came with a little piece of paper that I've never seen before in a tower hobbies order that says: "Warehouse flyback overstock." I wonder what that means. :?:
