Building my own track

Hey guys- I'm planning on building a 10th scale off road track with my brother to race our vintage rides. We're trying to decide what kind of dirt we want to use. My brother works in the excavating business and can get us some decomposed granite on the cheap. Do you think this would work ok or should we find some dirt with some clay in it. The track will be located in an area that will need dirt brought in.

As a rule a clay/sand mixture works best, unless you want to mix soil & Land Plaster together
to keep it's form

Don't mess with decomposed granite for a track. Jumps will never pack and it will always be loose and slippery. (I tried this when I lived in Socal.)

I agree, clay/sand/soil mixture always works best. Packs well and a little water will give it plenty of traction.

Unless you plan to keep the Vintage tires, I agree that the clay might be a better material.

me too, but the wife won't go for it. The best part is, the bigger the track, the less grass I have to mow

mine does.. shes letting me build mine the way want. 2/3's of the back yard. the other 1/3 is the drive way and the spot for the driver's stand.

I am seriously looking at building my own track.All my local race tracks seem to resemble supercross tracks and are by no means vintage freindly.What ever happened to nice flowing fast tracks,modern tracks seem so tight and technical and if your not a pro it makes it hard to string together any decent laps.We have a local track that has survived from the 80s and is unchanged,they dont race there anymore but is great for vintage cars,its a bit bumpy and made from decomposed granite so is nasty on chassis and pulleys on belt drive cars.I have been eyeing off a park down the road,I think I will start with a short mowed grass track and go from there.

That all depends on where you live!

I spent countless hours spraying Gly40 (round up) to keep the green stuff from growing. Seems like weeds love a freshly grommed RC track as much as I do....

Been there done that on the RC track in the back yard.
I am more into the have track will travel mode now that I got that out of my system....

Back when I had my XXNT I built me a track and didnt know a thing one about any of it. I did get me a mower and cut the grass low then I took and tilled the ground. After I did that I went through (for 3 weeks) and got the till weeds and grass out of it. After I did that I tilled it again cleaned it again then tilled it and went over it for one last final time. After I did that I took the mower and started packing the dirt in I made 3 rounds around my track then I took 2 old tires drilled them and bolted them togather and put a I hook on each to attach a chain to, I then took and druck the tires over the track. After I watered the track real good and let that soak in for a few hours then hit it with the tires again. I then took and built a wall around the whole track made of plywood that was about 3 foot tall. leaving me a wood gate to get the mower in there to tend to it and keep it smooth. Any how after I did all that I never really had a issue with weeds growing though I did get 1 or two here and there but not verry often.



I have since moved from there and have finally gotten permission to build a all new one in the old garden where nothing grows. No tomatos and I get my track

Well, my brothers and I finally built a track! We used some dirt that had been excavated and screened from a hotel construction site. It has some clay with some small pebbles. Its a work in progess. We definetly need a few more jumps. It is cool to have a place to run the old cars now.

their wont be any weeds on it if you use it
