new to brushlees and 2.4 radios

A main had a spectrum dx3.0 radio on sale so I picked it up along with a spectrum s6020 servo. Now I am looking at brushless combos. Ecelorin, novak, ae, mamba, etc. Will they all work with this radio? It is all going into a nib losi xxxbk2 kit that I haven't assembled yet. I have lipo 2s 40c hard case pack to use also.

Yup, any of those combos will work with that radio.
Actually, as far as I know, all car radios work with all car esc's.

Thanks for the info. I have little catching up to do on current radios. The last new radio I purchased was the futaba FP-T2PD AM.

I think you'll like the 2.4 radio. I switched from Futaba FM to an Airtronics 2.4ghz and love it! The range is unbeleiveable with the 2.4, and no glitches.

Looks like a good deal too at $75

I hear the lipos and brushless systems are awesome too but I haven't tried those new technologies yet.

So far I am looking at the mamba max and novac stuff. The xcelroin , tekin, are out of my price range. I saw some EZ RUN stuff on ebay but affraid to buy it. What I don't understand is the ESC for the brushless. Some say limited to 2s and to 3s lipo . Is there no BEC in the new stuff? To top it off there is sensored and unsensored. castle explains it some what on there site but I am still lost.

2s means: 2 cells connected in series = 7.4 volts
3s means: 3 cells connected in series = 11.1 volts
Most 1/10 scale buggies run 2s packs. For 1/10 racing, 2s is usually the max you can run.
I know a few people that race with those ez run escs, and they've seemed to have good luck with them. Personally, I've only really used Tekin or LRP in my race buggy's/tourers. You can find good deals on used esc's/motors... but if possible, it's a good idea to buy it from someone that you know treats their gear well. I bought an LRP esc/8.5 motor off a guy I race with for $100 a few months ago.

The last new radio I purchased was the futaba FP-T2PD AM.

I bought one of those when it was new... I think it was the last radio I bought before I took before I took an almost 20 year hiatus. I found one on kijiji last year, and bought it for $20. I just need to find a 75mhz am receiver and tx/rx crystals. I still think that is one of the most comfortable radios ever made. (although you'd have a hard time prying my DX3s out of my hand!)

There is, but the esc gets power it's receiver plug. you don't have to plug anything else in to get power.

To top it off there is sensored and unsensored. castle explains it some what on there site but I am still lost.

Here's a pic of a sensor wire. If you aren't going to race, i wouldn't worry too much about getting an esc that uses a sensor wire. The biggest advantage to a sensored motor/esc is that it is more sensitive to input, as well as being smoother, with no cogging/stuttering when going from a total stop to your initial acceleration. If you aren't racing, or if the price is right, a sensorless esc would do you just fine. Heck, even if you do plan to race, start with a less expensive sensorless setup. Whatever fits your budget, right?

look into speed passion or hobbywing's xe run series of bl esc's.
they are outstanding performers at a great price point.

i'm done with novak's esc's, i still run novak motors though.

when you see mention of the 2.4 ghz on the esc, they mean it will process inputs( steering, throttle) at a faster rate because that's what the 2.4 radio is capable of, any of the ESCs will work with the spektrum stuff.

I did like the AE i had in my 4.1, but it cogged at low rpms even with lipo and proper gearing. The 3300 motor had decent power and speed on 2s but nothing to write home about.
I picked up a reedy 3900 KV motor and it was closer to what i wanted personally. The AE systems are very quiet. My traxxas vxl is a whiney system.

Personally my rc10s i am getting in will have a mamba esc at least in it. I like the programability of it. Motor, i am thinking the 3900 again.

I like the Mamba Max Pro...Sensored, Sensorless...doesnt matter. I have run a 17.5, 13.5, 6.5, VXL and 4600 (an an unknown Orion sensorless motor) all with no issues.

To go along with this discussion, I have a question regarding the KV rating on a brushless motor.

If you have equivalent KV ratings on the motor, are they equal in terms of power?

I'm going on personal feel, but I say no. I know my Castle 4600 felt stronger and faster than my Novak 6.5 (rated @ 6400KV). My VXL (rated @ 3500KV) is a monster on torque and can take very tall gears, top end rivals both the 4600 & 6.5

There is a different feeling between sensored & sensorless also.

Now companies are coming out with 4 pole motors (VS the 2 pole motors now), which will put even more variance into the pool...

So, then does that explain why the 3500KV motor in the Bandit VXL makes it so much faster than the 3300KV in the RTR B4.1? I mean, Traxxas claims speed up to 70MPH with the Bandit, but I don't believe the B4.1 is anywhere near as fast? I wouldn't think 200 rpm/Volt would make that much difference.

In addition, is the turns ratio of a brushless motor related to the KV rating, or are they completely independent?
