Rear 5 link shock mount options

Post by greene-r74 »

I posted in the wanted section and started a discussion. So I'm moving it here.

I'm looking for an option to mount the shocks to the rear of the 5 link suspension without using the unobtainable stock Losi shock mounts. Any Ideas?

Not much talk about this since you opened the new thread, I put a comment and link to this thread on the other one.

I am still with you on this, and trying to think up a solution that is easily producable. I'll get back on here with what I can come up with...

I have a good idea of how to make some decent replacements. I have material, and the tools, I just need to stop at my parents this weekend to pick up some shock ends that I can use as sample to design from.

I'll let you know what I find.

Here is my idea, just need to build one and see how it works. I'm thinking about using a PCI back plate from a computer. Drill a hole right in the middle bolt the shock to it with a lock nut then bend it around all nice and pretty. Drill holes for the 2-26 hardware. Trim it down and paint it to match.

if I recall, that is pretty much what my brother did back in the day when he broke his lower mount. problem is that steel is kinda soft and will keep bending until it snaps or leave the shock at a funny angle, possibly binding or grinding on the top link.

I'm investigating either nylon or aluminum for the 'yoke' part, with a disc on top for the spring locator. should be simple enough, though it won't look like the original, but who gives a crap if its the last set you ever need.

I'm running XX shocks with white losi strike springs on my JRX2 runner. I mounted the shock to the links that run parallel with the shock tower (perpendicular to the centerline of the car). I'll post pics later.

I can't speak for geometry etc. but it works. The car jumps great, corners awesome and doesn't bottom out.

I'll post pics later if you want.

some pics would be cool.

I'm still working on this, just have been sidetracked. I made one prototype but had to rearrange a few dimensions due to how close the side links are, then got super busy the past week and couldn't get back to it. I expect to post some pics later this week.

i have been toying with the idea of chopping up an H arm, using the front portion with the 5 link and mounting the shock there...

anyone attempted this?

that sounds like my idea. I was going to make a 7 out of some sort of sturdy material and figure out how to bolt that up.

you can just mount the shock to one of the holes in the later version of the lower rear links. It will behave similarly to the chopped h-arm. The problem with doing this is that the link and chopped arm will both have a lot of rotation, so the mounting screw for the shock end will not stay at 90 degrees to the hinge pins.
I'm not sure I described it clearly, but if you bolt it up and articulate the suspension it will be obvious.
There doesn't seem to be too much rotational play in the link at first, but that will be magnified by the length of spacers needed to get the shock to line up properly, unless you use a shock tower spacer and rear-mount the shocks.

so I busted out my mad MS Paint (lack of) skilz...

Red is the proposed shock location, black is "stock".

I see what you are talking about the "sweep" of the arm putting the shock in a weird angle.

drawings not to scale, not even close...
