What's special about my RC10DS?

Post by Mustang5L5 »

Hey everyone. New guy here.

Pulled out my old RC10DS from 1996. I'm the original owner, and it pretty much sat on a shelf. Used it a handful of times back then.

In doing some research, seems these are still desirable? Should I keep it?

It's the Trans Am Mustang body, gold wheels, mechanical speed control. All original, no modifications.

Something collectable? No big deal? Clue me in here. Ultimately I'd like to keep it if it's something unique in the R/C world.

They are a unique vehicle due to the fact they were 2wd, at the time the touring craze took off with 4wd sedans. They have a niche, and it really depends on how much you like it whether to keep it or not. It is based on the RC10, so an option is to obtain buggy parts and convert it to a buggy, if that is what you want.

the fate of the ds is really up to you and what you want. It certainly has a comparable resale value to any other vehicle of the time.

Since you've had it so long I'd recommend keeping it. You'd miss it once it's gone. It would bring a fair price, but nothing outrageous.

So it's more of a niche car vs a collectable.

I'll prob keep it then. I was 15 when i built it. Still remember it like yesterday

That's how you justify keeping it to the wife. You toss in on, set the reserve above market value and when it doesn't sell you say "Guess nobody wanted to buy it, but i'm not throwing it out!" and put it back on the shelf.

Seriously, i'm fine with putting it back on the shelf. It's a toy from my childhood and I'd like to keep it. I just like to know what I have exactly or if i shouldn't even drive it or paint the body or things like that? Or should I just enjoy it for what it is...an older R/C car.

Trust me, I know from experience... you're gonna regret it. Maybe not tomorrow, maybe not next year, but someday... :|

Personally, I'd keep it...If nothing more, than to make it a shelf queen or light street runner. If you have any interest in RC at all, you'll regret selling selling it. (Especially since you're the original owner, and it's a member of the RC10 "family").

I have bought and sold a number of vintage RC but I've only sold one of my original cars from when I was a kid and I am kicking myself to this day for that mistake, mostly because I also got rid of the box! I can buy replacement but finding a box for that car will be impossible!

But sounds like the OP is just seeing what the market might bring for it. Hopefully the reserve is really high if that is your plan because that thing is mint!

Reserve was $200.

But doesn't matter now. I got nervous and ended the auction. I had 42 watchers on it and tons of questions, so I got nervous and didn't think my reserve was high enough so i killed it. Screw the wife..i'm keeping it :)

It was never about how much i could sell it for. It was more about giving me a reason to keep it. After doing a lot of reading, and seeing how much interest I got in the car, i decided to keep the car and be a part of "this".

First thing i'm going to do, is take the car apart and clean it up. I'd call it a "resto", but there really isn't much to do. Prob just disassemble it, wipe it down, try and remove the light oxidation from various metal parts and keep it 100% original and in mint shape. It really is a "survivor" and It's barely been driven really.

I also have a Kyosho GP10 spider from early 90's that I'm the original owner of. This one i plan on frequently driving however.

I have a feeling a lot of people who were watching that auction are disappointed...but I'm keeping MY car :)

Serious question though. Would you paint the body, or keep it unpainted? What else would you do with it?

Now that i'm officially keeping it. here's some pics

I would clean it up and get it back to perfect running condition, but I would only run it on carpet so as not to scratch the chassis. If it was my car I would do the box art Mustang paint scheme! IMO
