I believe ur breaking some rules with this question... i would go read the rules ur not aloud to ask "what is it worth " type questions and if you are trying to make them to sell you should wait until you have bst permissions... not trying to be a d-bag it's. Just the rules here

no thats not what i am asking at all i was asking to see if it would be worth while to give an old retired machinist something to do and maybe make a little money for himself. was asking if any one would be interested in buying some to make it a worth while endeavor, just seeing if there is an interest or not.

maybe i should just ask a different way

here goes

Is delrin the most suitable replacement material for idler gears ????

I am not a plastics guy all I know is the Delrin gears that thorp made for many cars are still sought after today. Are there better materials? Not sure. But Delrin was popular.

People play jump rope with the value rule all the time, I don't see it as a problem if you have BST access and name a price but to ask what we are willing to pay is against the rules. If I said $25 a set I'd be screwing the guy that says $15 and the guy saying $40 is screwing both of us. It's better if we just don't "bid" value.

That being said.....if you build them, people will buy them

The best thing you could do is have some gears made from a few different types of material and give them a test to see which ones hold up. It would be terrible for you to have gears made from material then find out as soon as power is applied, the gears become toast.

I will add to your endeavor a bit too, find material that would hold the power of a mild brushless system. I know there are several guys here that have used mild brushless systems with 6 gear trannies with great success. I also know of some who have trashed gears using the same systems as well.

Good luck with the gears, I know there is some pretty complicated things that go into gears. As stated earlier, make them good and strong and you will get interest.

The original gears were nylon and later glass filled. The thorp 48 pitch idler gears were delrin. Any of those would be suitable. If you to select something like a Moly filled nylon it would provide some additional lubrication, but not sure how strong it is. Sterling drive products sells gear blank around 6 inches long but not sure if they have the right pitch tooth count or material but that could really cut down on work required.

yeah i am sorry if i am causing a stir. i was trying to figure out a break even point. i was not looking to make any money from this endeavor. just trying to keep my 6 gears running without having to buy a used tranny for parts every time. I have found 2 foot delrin rod to make it, not really the cost factor, paying for someone elses time is the issue. thanks for the responses. i was hoping that it wouldn't cost any more then $8-10 for a pair with replacement screws and the allen wrench.

That would be an amazing price. Stocks were $5 for comparison.

Not trying to bust yer diff balls just trying to make sure you understand why we have the rules as well as letting you know they are there. Im sure they will be a hit!

i haven't given up on making these gears. just saw NIP black idler gears with wrench and scews on the bay go for $25   i wouldn't pay that

have been talking to a couple of plastic dealers and they said i would need a CAD drawing of the gear to see what it would take to make it, i could probably draft it up by hand but i didn't pursue it much further because they were the middle men and not the actual manufacturer.
