SG Coyote -interesting running changes AND BUILD THREAD!

Post by GoMachV »

Found a few oddities with my two kits. The newest one with the orange sticker is a front wheel drive version and the other is a rwd version. Both boxes are printed properly stating 2wd without using a sticker however they still show and speak of the 4wd features. There is a difference in box art paint and wheels
Image

Image

Inside there are different wheels and tires (narrow fronts on the rwd, fwd has all 4 wide) as well as different color box innards. The gears on the rwd are metal but are unlike the gears on the fwd which are hardened. I don't see a cylinder to go around the diff on the fwd either. I purchased a set of gears on eBay "from a kit" and they are different yet.

Image
Please ignore the TBG body lol!
Image

I will be building one up after removing the rwd components to add to my fwd kit so I will post up anything else "odd" that pops up.

Those front shocks certainly are the definition of "laydown."

I also like how the box pics are of the 4WD version.
I miss brushed motors in that hazy, everything seemed better when I was a kid, kind of way.

Ok, found some more fun stuff with the diffs. I have a front wheel drive, a rear wheel drive, and an eBay diff (early plastic style) as well as an eBay metal ring gear (non hardened). I had no idea they had so many changes. The rwd/4wd manual shows the correct diff for what was in the box, as does the fwd/4wd manual shows its correct diff.

And a few steps completed. This goes together much nicer than I remember as a kid! The diff is smooth (packed with ceramic grease lol) and the trans is very smooth!

Great thread and great idea with the running changes on this car. I thought there were two very different versions of this car. My school mate had two of these cars and they had the plastic pinion that went into the crown gear. It has a flat on one side and was complete rubbish. It would chew out straight away and nothing could stop it from doing so (we tried).
Another thing I remember was that the stub axles held on to the wheels fixed off with an E clip. It seems all the models I have come across in recent years actually have a lock nut in it's place.

As for the box art, check the body shell design with the black rims. It's not a Coyote shell but in fact the AYK 566B Super Trail lexan body. With closer examination you will see what I mean.

Also, my buddies Coyote's never came with that silly translucent bumper but the lexan undertray section formed the skid plate/bumper as in the boxart with the black rims.

Good info Jason! I had one bitd and a couple since then but never a kit. My goal was to have a 4wd nib which I now have (swapped out the bags between the fwd and rwd to make one) and had enough left over for this rwd build. I remember clips on the wheels on my first one now that you mention it, but every one since was a nut. Very interesting.

Continuing with the build, it's almost finished. Enough for tonight anyway.

A few observations

The tie rods suck. I cannot stress this enough. I tried tapping them, using wax on them, finally ending in using a vice to hold the rods while trying everything to get the ends on. I have no idea why but this was the biggest challenge in the kit. The center rod was fine.

The manual says "f" on the arms goes to the rear of the car. Well that didn't make sense and also was incorrect lol.

The shocks are more unique than I remembered. One Oring seals the entire shock. Nothing but oil pressure holds it in place and both the cap and bottom rely on the threads to "seal". Remarkably the seem to hold oil ok. Lots of work to get the piston free in the bore. The piston also screws onto the shaft.

Here are some pics

These tie rods SUCK. What a pita

And finally supported by shocks

Bolink did it before HPI as well. Not the term but the design.

Forgot to mention, since all my stock dogbones went to my 4wd version I needed some for this rwd kit. The OT-6 kyosho dogbone (still in production) fits perfectly after trimming the pin length on the outboard end.

Hi Jeff. The more I get to thinking on the earliest version of these Coyote's the more I wonder how many different production runs and changes that went by. Both of my friend's Coyote's had the battery sticks cable-tied to the chassis. I'm pretty sure there was a slot machined in the alloy side plates which located the cells on each side. I certainly don't remember either car having those black plastic mounts to accommodate the end of each stick battery.
Back in the day we both bought our cars from the same shop and I remember the Japanese shop owners experimenting with these cars in competition racing. They were running narrow rims all round with HotShot front block tyres on all corners.

Jeff, my car 4WD is sporting the ugly looking metal gears on the LH side. They look chrome plated or something :? but I have also purchased the plastic gear and will most likely run the plastic crown with the hardened steel pinion. At this point the metal gear is really noisy so the plastic gear may eleiminate that problem (hopefully).
I still intend to put mine on to a race track in the near future.

Also have you noticed a difference in the upper suspension arms? When I built my car I went with the same upper arms front and rear. I would have thought the RWD car would use greater caster on the front being 2WD, you will see the offset difference if you compare what you have.
