RC10 Graphite and Gold Pan Resto Projects

I recently decided to re-build an RC-10 to what I once used to own.
What I had though wasn't a simple gold pan but a fully tricked out graphite (D&D) chassis, A&L arms rear, Andy's front, graphite towers, MIP gearbox (pre-stealth), fully polished associated shocks, losi cranks, and the list goes on, RC-10.
So as I have been kicking myself for virtually giving it away in my early 20s, I decided I should just try and resurrect something close to what I once had. So I purchased a couple off e-bay, a gold pan (for the arms), and a AE Graphite w/ stealth, full bearings, and CVD's. In my attempt to rebuild/recondition the graphite I have been wondering what really I got myself into. By visiting AE I found they barely support the RC-10. I found a few parts scattered throughout local hobby shops and started both projects.
First, just to get my feet wet with tearing these buggy's down I started with the gold pan. I spent about 5 hours in deconstruction and soaked/scrubbed every part/screw. I decided to dye all the parts black, since most of the newer RC10 parts I found at shops were black.

Nice restos mate, but why did you swap the white parts on the graphite for black ones? It was looking way better in the first pic, but that's just me I guess... Welcome aboard by the way

I feel just the opposite. I was never a fan of white partson an off road car. white parts are just an invitattion to dye them another color.

As far as the parts go though....

It was personal preference especially since the car had some wear.

A few reasons why I dyed the parts were:
1. I wanted the parts to match the black Andy's arms.
2. I replaced some of the scratched plastic white parts with new associated parts which only came in black.
3. When I switched to 3/16 wheels they only came in yellow, which I planned to dye black.
4. Wanted to use new AE blue hardware which to me looked better with black.

Be assured if I ever purchase a gold/graphite in new (no wear) condition I will most likely leave it that way.

I found every screw and zip tie imaginable on this thing, Check out the big plexiglass box on the rear shock tower. Any guesses?.........Yes thats the speed control. I was just as surprised when I saw it in person, somehow the previous owner would do anything to revive crap as long as it worked. Wish I had more close up pictures, and was even a little curious to see it work, but I couldn't stand holding onto it and trashed it. I was really hoping for a clean chassis too, by the picture it looked decent. Yet after I started cutting zip ties and piano wire I found epoxy mixed with sand caked on and around the front shock tower and kick-up and more on the rear around the transmission. Hopefully its salvageable.

How did you blacken the shock plates of your first cars in this tread?

I dyed them, little longer than I dyed the plastic. The original towers that came on the car I bought came out a perfect smoke color, while the new ones I bought when I visited Associated came out dark but milky on the surface. I recommend if you try it use older fiberglass parts.

Ahhhh, I found my first post.

Looking at the pics takes me back.
A couple things in retrospect....
1. If you plan on using a bottle of RIT think twice and ask someone on here whether its a good idea.
2. If the car is going into a box don't add silicone to the shock bodies.
3. I cant believe I got my first ever gold pan in 2007. The graphite I built in this thread was in homage to the one I had as a kid, however it had the chassis on the car in the last pic with an A/L conversion rear susp and an MIP SP-1.
4. Those 1.02s are way too long on the Gold Pan.

A few revisions on the graphite build:
- the front a rear shock towers are now Fiberlytes.
- the Losi bellcranks are now MIPs
Eventually I will add more pictures.
