3D printed Stealth gearbox housing.

Post by SnoopMaxx »

How about a 3D printed Stealth gearbox housing. ?

Do you think it would be strong enough ?
I'm having a hard time finding white stealth housings in good condition

There are two on eBay right now. New in bag and used. I lucked out and found a low run time used complete trans.

Just from experience, my only concern regarding the housing is gonna be heat. I used a makerbot 2 to print a bulkhead recently and some of the supports ended up inside of holes, When drilling them out, the heat cause the supports and some of the surrounding material to melt. It re-solidified shortly after but all over my drill bit.

Talk to the guys at old rc about print materials, I'm not sure what handles heat best.

I think it could work very nicely myself. Compared to the 6 gear, the stealth transmission was very small in size and has plenty of room to increase the size of it for support. Personally, I want to figure out a 4wd kit that uses new parts but is compatible with the gold pan.

I should have a black case not being used at moment. I can model it up at some point. Im not sure when I'll have some free time but I could probably try to 3d print a case. It wont be usable due to heat but its possible to do. Maybe chris REC has some measurement already taken we could borrow.

While I think a printed case for the stealth would be nice an all, then the shortage would be outdrives, then gears then... I like that plan that was going recently to make a trans case that used modern parts in it as it doesn't cause additional drain on limited no longer produced resources. I tend to agree with the modern internals ideal. If you are going to put together a case, why not design it to fit with b4 internals? How about re-engineer a mip 4-10 style kit but with modern diffs?

Yeah, when the 2,25 alloy trans was offered here (last year ?)
I asked about a 2,6 housing that would have the same bolt pattern and fit on the tub

I know I can create a model for a transmission that supports newer internals. The issue is i dont have the parts to create models from. I have access to a printer but the materials it uses isnt suitable for this application.

Also as clm said, If i were to do a full conversion, Id rather use a better differential too. for sizing purposes, this one by durango would be my likely choice, Make an all in one kit that is easier to use.

http://www.team-durango.com/part-info.php?partNo=TD210034

Id say it would be best to figure out all the needed gears before anything else started.

A 6 gear or 3 gear case that would fit newer 2.6 gears would be the best idea considering the parts shortage. I have a new set of 2.25 out drives that I just can't bring my self to open.

The stealth is due for rerelease anyway so the "shortage" should be short lived.

its due but AE hasnt given the slightest hint of it coming out besides the stealth holes in the rere chassis. how long did it take between the original rc10 and the stealth varient to come out?

A 6 gear looking case but with a 3 gear setup would work too

It's funny that you linked to my mate's Danish site for the Durango diff

I'd prefer to use AE internals, either gear or ball diff,
Are the SC10 gears the same as the B4 gears ?

the 2wd drives are the same. I used sc10 spur gears and gear cover with my b4 topshaft and had no clearance issues.

wouldnt a stealth inside a 6 gear mess up the the spacing on the outdrives? I really need a b4 tranny to see the sizing of all these parts.

Thinking about the bigger differential gear from the b4, the only option that would be available is to push the pinion gear a little higher to where the gear angle is closer to 110 degree angle between topshaft and spur. The top shaft has to stay in place and the differential needs to raise up so the only movement can be the idler. Just for reference, the only things I'm thinking that are changing is the housing, internals, and gear cover.
