Double Decker RC10GT

Post by romulus22 »

First I want to say, there is no real reason to do this other than I just like to fabricate stuff. I'm shaping it just like the stock chassis to avoid looking like or "copying" the A-Main chassis. The top plate and trans brace will be made out of fiberglass and the parts will be white plastic. Wanting this to look like it could've been a prototype truck before Associated stuck with the tub chassis.

Here it is so far. Will take it to work on Monday and stick it in the brake and make the bends. Pretty happy with it so far considering its all hand cut, drilled, filed, sanded.

I screwed up and way over bent the nose where the bumper mounts. Tried bending it back and it started to crack so I just snapped it off. I guess ill just stick an RPM mini bumper on there.

Yep staying nitro. Top plate will be Fiberglass. And that's what I have to order now that I'm this far.

This is a very rough cut but close to what the top deck will look like. Ill pick up some poster board to perfect it before I transfer to glass.

are you going to do the A-Main style body mount to connect the upper deck to the tower?

I don't want to for the simple fact it has been done already. Thinking about just making some mounting blocks and drilling the tower.

I dug around and found a Manila envelope, made a better template. Still not perfect but closer.

Well I didn't pay attention and I ordered the wrong type of fiberglass. But I put it to use anyway and made a hard template to make my final adjustments. I really like the outside shape but I'm not sure how much fat I should trim to lighten it up. Probably just open up the tank hole a little, and make it slightly narrower on the sides. I'm keeping it beefy by the carb/flywheel as I'm going to add a brace to the trans there as well.

That is looking really good and it amazes me how you guys can make these custom parts. So, what kind of carbon fiber is that? I like the greenish tint to it.

The top deck is "structural fiberglass (frp)", gomachv sent me the part number for the G10 fiberglass I was supposed to buy but I was busy, forgot, and just bought the first stuff I found. I do have plenty to tinker with now though

And as for making custom parts, anyone can do it you just have to try.

Here's my final template ready to transfer to the G10 fiberglass. I decided ill mount the nose much like the Duratrax Gas conversion. I think it's better to tie into the bulkhead itself than the tower.

Thanks! It does look like a solid piece of carbon fiber. I like the new template you made. Should tie everything in nicely.

I see now how you cut out the bottom chassis plate. It looks like you have enough material to make another custom chassis.
