Confused By New RC12L Plastic Coloring

Post by morrisey0 »

I am purchasing a RC12L in mostly-built / not completed / sitting on a shelf since condition ..............and I love all that, but have questions about the coloring :?: I don't want to press the owner with it too much, because I think I am getting a deal, and I just want to gently walk in, pay the man, and walk away nicely with no issues, because to be honest, I want a pure RC12L, and this thing is just that.

But then I think about the coloring. I haven't seen parts this color before. :( Was dying parts previous to assembly a thing at some point? Was this something that could have been factory? I have found a single picture in reference to a "Hot Trick Chassis" that appears to red chassis with many red components, but this one has a standard graphite chassis, and the components don't line up color wise. Any thoughts?

Looks most likely the standard white components have been dyed red.... people have been doing that for decades.

Thanks guys! That was what I was thinking, just weird to start dying parts before you even complete finishing it. :?

Since it is nothing special, and I don't really like the "burgundy," wonder how dying a darker color on top of the dye will work? I have some graphite grey and black sitting around. Either would be better than what is there.

I don't mind the darker look.... I used to have a carbon fibre 10L that looked pretty much the same....

Sadly I have seen that done before on a pan car.

I meant that if I picked up a new 12L back in the day, I would be all about getting that thing done and running. I wouldn't take the time to dye parts from the get go. Now maybe after owning it awhile, and the white parts kept bothering me, then maybe break it down and make a change. But not on day one.

I remember I had a set of premounted 1/12 wheels that I wanted to dye black, I put the whole thing in a pot of dye, wheels tires and all............ worked great

I also bought a NIB 12LS and dyed it black straight away as the black parts were the latest thing...... If I could go back in time now I would have slapped my younger self....

hahaha I purchased a 12L myself in the early 90's along with a pack of burgundy RIT dye powder. All white parts were dyed and once dry i would started with the build...it looked exactly like your photo. i even dyes the foam wheels.

For the rest of my cars i would dye any of my white parts in black as the burgundy was kind patchy.

I guess it was the thing to do. Some say it made the nylon parts stronger...not the dye but the boiling in water process.

I have a 93 white parts RC10GT dyeing for dye...lol. NOT

Completely confirmed, this was a thing. Thanks! :D

Should be picking up the whip in the morning. This thing was never fully assembled, and I don't think the tires have ever touched ground. I am looking forward to recreating a pure shelf queen out of this one!

A pure shelf queen would have white nylon, you can't whiten the dyed parts so you'll have to either keep the red if you like it, dye the parts black, or try to track down new white parts.

What are your plans?

The current plan is to dye all the "burgundy" and white parts black.

Novak Rx and ESC, EastCoast Racing Motor, Futaba Magnum Tx. All of this is in hand.

Will have 7.2v split C packs. Figuring out what path to take here as OG Sanyos are hard to find.

Body will probably be a generic GTP shell. Will keep it clear so not too particular.

I would like to build and run this thing, but it is too pure. I don't think the tires have ever touched the ground before. Will know for sure tomorrow when it is in my hands. :D

Thats the problem with only getting one, lol. You wish to run it but are afraid to because its too pure...

I ran my 12L with a 6 cell saddle pack setup, a 27 turn motor and a Camaro body (with a wired wing)...that setup gave me longer run times than my JRXT and great handling. i had sooooooo much fun running it on the parking lot and school yards. I literally ran that car into the ground...it was the best driving and so simple to maintain.

You need to get another one
