Traxxas Bullet Diff

Post by gtrgeo »

So, I am trying to get my old decrepit Bullet running again and have been assembling some parts from ebay. It appears I hit a problem with the diff. My original diff had the bevel gears and had seen better days. I was going to buy the planetary diff when a 4620 ball diff popped up on eBay for what seemed to be a reasonable price. I received the diff and it appeared to have all of the parts even though the package had been opened. The instruction sheet was missing but I was not too concerned as it is not the first ball diff I have assembled. I assembled the diff using associated stealth lube on the balls and the black grease on the thrust bearing. Other than the balls being extremely tight into the gear it went together without issue and feels smooth. When I went to install the diff in the gearbox along with the required 1783 top gear I found the diff was too small. Did I receive the wrong diff or does this diff normally have a larger gear?

Here is the parts list and a pic from the eagle manual since it came with the ball diff. Maybe this will help

Sorry the pics are sideways. I don’t know of a way to fix it on here

Thanks! So it looks like I need a 4624 gear. I found a listing for one on Amazon which indicates the gear has 68 teeth. The gear I currently have has 60 teeth. I assume this was for the Rad2 and the like which had an idler gear if I remember correctly. Is it possible that the rest of the diff is correct and I will only need the gear?

It looks that way to me from the pictures. There is a larger gap between the teeth and outer part of the diff ring, which looks like the ring is the same

Thanks everyone for the help. I was able to get a copy of the instruction manual from Traxxas and it showed the 4624 gear was needed for a Sledgehammer which uses the same gearbox as the Bullet. Thankfully they seem to be readily available.

I posted the instructions here in case anyone runs across this needing a copy. https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?p=524820#p524820

Those are the toughest Traxxas parts to hunt down since almost all of them broke. Good luck in your search!!!

If you not totally in love with a full restore, and don't mind drilling holes, you could update the trans and separate arm mounts style used is other models. Like hawk 2, rad 2 etc

Actually, some of the later models may have incorporated the arm mounts again
