Cougar and Cougar ID?

Post by Jools »

One of these is a standard 'original' Cougar. I bought the other one (with the fat wheels) -and it was advertised as a Cougar -it needed plenty of parts and it was very rough, but there are a few variations between it and my original Cougar. I seem to remember someone (was it you Alex?) telling me it was 'something else'. Is that the case or has someone just done a custom build? What is it?

To my non-Schumacher eye, it looks like a Storm. But it could be a Cougar that was converted into a truck. I don't know the small differences.

Going back over my old posts, it seems it might be a 'Shotgun'
That seem right?

If it happened more than 15 minutes ago, I'm not likely to remember ;)

I think, from memory, we talked about it being possibly a Shotgun or Storm, as it has a lot of Truck bits and piece... could also be a Club 10 mk.1 Storm, due to the chassis colour.

All the parts and upgrades from pretty much each generation of Cougar / Shotgun / Storm / Club 10 can co-exist together.... the only thing that can't is the TopCat front laydown shocks, as they have to have specific mounts on the chassis. As such, hard to call it a custom build.... more a "I needed parts, and these were available" build. Still, would still go well!

Cheers Alex. Yes it goes like *hit off a shovel, and those fat tyres really help it in the dirt.

From the pic you’ve got of it the truck looks to have a chassis with all the original topcat holes pressed into it so more than likely started life as either a topcat or early cougar and had a shotgun conversion added later on.

Front tower is an early release cougar 2 that doesn’t have the sides trimmed out for spring clearance or the bottom trimmed to go in front of the 322 front plate.

Rear tower is shotgun as are the rear hub carriers, the his were also used on cougar 2 bosscat etc

Rear bulkhead is an updated mk1 with the bottom changed to accept saddle packs. Could probably give you more info with more pics.

Hope this helps

Thanks mate that's a very thorough rundown of it's provenance.
A bit of a mongrel then, though 'Metisse' -sounds much nicer doesn't it!

I wouldn’t really say mongrel 😂 it’s just what we did back in the day as Schumacher produced conversion kits that were way cheaper than buying a whole new kit.
The whole Ali pan series from top cat through were pretty much interchangeable parts wise so some times if a part got broken you just bought the new version in stead, your cougar at the top is a example of that as well, looks to have a cougar 2 rear bulkhead, rear shock tower and short wheel base rear arms. the front lower plate has been drilled out to take the shotgun front bumper / body mount too so may have been a truck at some point in its life also.

Cheers Adrian
