Removing tires from rims

Hello all,

I have a very nice set of JRX2 tires that are glued to the rims. I want to remove the tires from the rims but not destroy the rubber in the process. Any suggestions?

Ive been thinking about starting a thread on which wheels can be acetoned.This is the only method I have ever used.I know Tamiya wheels cant be acetoned.I have used it on XXX and XX wheels,Kyosho Ultima outlaws,RC10T,J.C's,CAT 3000s and thats all I can remember.I would be interested if JRX2 5 spokes and Pro wheels work.

acetone can expand some types of rubber from what i have encounted. so please be careful, a quick wipe over rims is a good test if it will eat the material

DO NOT use acetone on early Losi rims.

Better off sitting them in hot water and "working" the bead - not too hot cause the rims warp with too much heat.

You could also try Nitro fuel - I have used this before.

Which wheels do you have?

For the later wheels (dish and all 5 spokes except the light orange), you can use acetone. For the early wheels (light orange), you can use Castrol Super Clean (purple liquid). This takes longer, but it will not harm the wheels or tires.

Thanx to all who have given suggestions on removing tires from rims without harming the rubber tires. I think the boiling water method is best suited to my situation.

I've come across two other problems.

I now have a bunch of tires that need to be cleaned of various dirt and clay stains. I've tried using warm water and simple green and a scrub brush. This has removed some of the dirt and/or clay but has not completely cleaned the tires. I keep hearing about something called Castrol Super clean...would this be something to use on rubber tires to get them clean?

Lastly, I was thinking of using silicon spray on the rubber tires to return their luster and help preserve them. Does anyone have a better idea?

I have a set of Optima Mid rims that need to be dismounted. Wondering about the acetone bath. The only rims I ever melted were some kind of aftermarket I think.

Wurth rubber care works very well. I'd be careful with silicone, it may dry out the rubber over time.

I have not melted any rims yet but they were all nylon. The tires on the rims have turned to mush using acetone.

Hey Gary,

If they are the white optima mid wheels, then the acetone bath will work fine. If you have the silver wheels from the mid SE, then the acetone will remove most of the color.

On the losi tires, they are covered with the mold release. Through the years, I've tried scrubbing them clean...only to have the white/wax finish come back. The mold release is what gets dirty. The Super Clean will remove the everything...dirt and mold release.

I beleive the mold release was worst on the HT (high traction) compound losi tires and the early proline R.E.D. tires.

Pure acetone isn't a good idea,but nail polish remover works real good,I've found.
It has acetone in it,but only *just* enough to do the trick,without melting tyres and rims.
Followed by soapy water to neutralise it,never fails me.

FYI - I managed to get the Optima Mid tires off with no damage to the rims. The tires did soften quite a bit but since they were junk I didn't mind. The acetone turned the CA into mush.

Weird, I dropped a set of the silver Turbo Ultima rims in the acetone bath expecting the finish would get ruined, but it made it A-OK. Then I had another front pair off of a different T. Ultima that I used simple green on to prep them for the acetone. The simple green took care of the silver for me.
