I thought everyone would enjoy these cars. Both are on loan to me by my long-time friends so that I can get photos of them together and share the information.

The Buggy is owned by Bob Campbell and is a modified Edinger that he thinks was purchased from Circus Hobbies. This was after the first guy at the raceway showed up with an RC10 and the scramble was on to find a kit. It was a team car with Don Brown. Don and Bob previously were racing Cox Scorpion/MIP Baja Bugs. The paint jobs on the two new RC10s were identical and its an original one that Bob came up with for them. One had the stripes diagonal to the left and the other to the right or mirror image. (See an RPS Yokomo with the same paint in that forum) This car is very heavily modified now from its original configuration although still very mild from the previous car he ran as Bob had been known to come in with external reservoir shocks that he had machined up to try out. At some point this car ran the Baja Bug body that had been on the Cox/MIP car as the surviving body has been notched for the front tubes. It was a favorite of his as the paint job on the Baja matched Bob’s Baja daily driver at the time. The car was retired for a new JRX2 Losi Car. The wing currently on the car has a Losi Sticker so I assume it did duty there as well.

The Baja Bug belongs to George Beck. George’s car came from Custom Hobbies here in Colorado Springs and was the sister car to mine. This was an RC Plane only shop that had begrudgingly started selling RC Car stuff. Jack the owner somehow landed 6 kits of which most were basic with no body etc. I bought one and called George who quickly did the same. The body was painted for him by Bob and was based on a Class 5 car that ran during that time. It is still very stock in many respects although there is no longer any anodizing on the bottom and the chassis has been swiss cheezed. Its obvious that this car has been raced hard and has spent some time on its roof by the condition of the body. George reminded me that due to the round roof, the bugs would often roll right back over on the wheels! Dont miss the wing on this car. The message on there was due to the practice of mixing the 4WD cars in with the 2WD at the time.

I'm liking the beetle and the mods to the buggy body a lot!! Very cool that these remained in their race trim.

Im glad you guys are enjoying these photos. Here is one that is the inspiration for the aero on the side pods on Bobs Buggy. Bob and I have alot of history in Pikes Peak and while this car was being actively raced they were trying lexan extensions on the sidepods on many of the Wells Coyotes. The car pictured has them in aluminum but these are similar in shape.

Here is a photo of a pair of Baja Bodies. The Blue car is the one that matched Bobs full size car and had been ran on the Cox/MIP and later on the RC10 at some point due to the clearance for the front tubes.

I checked on this and Bob claims that there was inspiration for the paint on the Buggy. He says that it was inspired by Rod Millens paint sceme on a Mazda 626. I have found a photo of Rods 4wd RX7 Rally car and you can see the that the colors are the same as this theme was used on many of his racecars. Here in Colorado Springs we have seen some of the most spectacular racing equipment in the world all due to the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. Where in the US can you claim to have seen Group B rally cars in action let alone Rod Millen at the wheel of one. The influence here has been very different that in the remainder of the country.

I agree on real off road race tracks with real jumps. Goomed hard pack dirt tracks are for Sprint Cars and Late Models. All very cool but another form of motorsports.

Bob did have a photo that he had taken at Millens shop in California when in route to crew for Wayne Demonja at the Baja 1000 one year showing Millens standard colors.

The 2nd and 3rd pics are of these two cars again racing. Bob has a different version of his colors on the car in these two.

4th Pic is of a Race win. Note that the car is still in the original short arm configuration with the gold pan here. Scratchbuilt wing out back, Tamiya fronts and aluminum wheels. RC10 Sprint Car running 2nd also in the pic so this might have been at an Oval event.

5th Pic again a race win taken earlier than the one above it. Note the early 7 rib tires have had ribs cut out on a lathe in an attempt to get rid of the push. This was something we tried on Race week number 2 for these cars when they first came out so this is must be a very early shot.

NOTE: On the last two shots the stripes are on the opposite direction from the body the car still sports today.
