Schumacher "Cougar 2 Works" rebuild - 1993 Vintage Purple.

Post by Doc J33P »

After finding some of these sites just recently I have been bitten by the bug so to speak. I bought a Cougar 2 Works back in May of 1993 from Stormer Hobbies. I remember having my Mom order it for me via a phone call. Internet was not common yet, lol. Any way, I moved recently and found some stuff. Apparently I threw away all of my spare parts for this and my JRX series of rides. But, I still have the box, the manual, and the original advertisements. Over this last week I tore this one down and cleaned her up. The shocks still had the original 10 WT oil in them and still worked without leaking. I had a Reedy Mr"E" in the buggy with Panasonic matched "Pushed Cells". Futaba S9301 did the steering and a Tekin 411p2 did the control. I built the car to the specs of the RCCA article back then. I still have the magazine as well. Overall it was fun as it brought back many memories of the past. Up next is my LXT tear down and re-build. Still have the manual and box for that as well. So, here is the re-build in all its splendor. I photographed a lot of the build as there might be people out there who have never seen the oddities that Schumacher put into their cars. Single bearing hubs up front, belt drive, etc...

Wheels. I painted these neon red and yellow so I stripped them. They still need more work:

SO, that is it for this one. Can't decide if I want to fire her up and take her for a spin. After all of that work though, she might be better on the shelf next to her kind, lol.

Thanks for looking.

These are great cars , this is also my favorite vintage 2WD car.
I got three myself.
I saw you need a lexan gearcover to finish the car , these are very rare.
You did a great job.

Thankyou for posting the many pics, not one too many!

Just like you said: very interesting for those like me who never took a close look bitd.
Our club didn't have real fans so the only schumies I saw were from the occasional vistors at our open events.

Jeroen - I have the piece that mounts to the tranny but lost the other part. I am not worried about finding parts for it. I think this one will just be what she is. I think I may strip the body though.

Damn nice collection of Works cars there!!! I think you like them, lol.

Ed - I remember I was the only kid at the track that had a Schumie. I remember all of the older guys liking it a lot. I also remember them intentionally crashing me when I took first place in the B-Main my first run out. I learned back then that a lot of the older racers didn't like the youngins' winning races.

They were built different then the norm. That is why I bought it. When RCCA had their article I went nuts. I read it everyday for a long time until I bought one. It really ran great! Heck, I might have to fire it up now, lol.

Yup that is my all-time favorite issue. Read it again this last weekend. I carried that thing around with me for months back then. Seriously read it 100 times. Glad I kept it.

Great article and even nicer example of one of the rarest Schueys ever released. These are hard to come by now days and yours is awesome non the less. I have raced one of mine in recent months and the car is just awesome to drive. The final work in the alloy pan series of Schuey buggies amd by far the best. Well done and welcome to the TEAM.

Thanks guys. I guess I am glad that I kept it, lol. My fiancee doesn't understand why I have so many "toys" lying around. But, I think she likes the looks of the Works Car.

While I am at it, anyone have access to these wheels/disks for sale? I have the originals but the time it will take to sand down and polish each disk will be about 3-4 hours. If anyone has a lead or wants to sell some I would appreciate it.
