PB Mini Mustang in original condition

Post by GWXP »

Hey everyone,

I must admit I felt inspired when I came across this site with all the history of RC Cars on display for all to see. I too grew up with RC Cars in the 80's and although in my mid 30's now I have just recently returned to the hobby after almost 20 years with Nitro powered buggies and trucks.

Here is a few pics of my first real racer, the PB Mini Mustang in mint condition. Fair to say I only raced it a handful of times outdoors while a lot fo racing was done indoors hence the silicone coated tires!!

Just seeing the likes of the Optima's, Schumacher Cat's, Mugen Bulldog's etc. on this site brought back some great memories....

These custom made silicon tires were awesome on the floorboards in halls that we used to race in. Can someone else confirm that these were in use elsewhere for racing indoors?

My memory is a little hazy but these could be the original tires..

It is powered by a Tekin Stock motor (can you still by these things?!?) and I also have a couple of the Mabuchi motors.

Another Australian PB owner, well done and welcome to the forum. I have a soft spot for PB's and seeing yours added here is most welcome in my opinion.

Did the two speed tranny work well on this car for racing?

bitd i worked at a hobby shop and we ahd a mini mustang nib that sat on the shelf for years.
one day the boss asked me to build it and put it on display.
i eagerly accepted because i wanted to know what was in that box.

now, understand that up until then i only was familiar with tamiya, kyosho, associated and losi.

so when i opened the box i was less than impressed. i wondered how old it was and what weirdo designed it.

it was a very strange car to me, but i built it. IIRC i had to boil the plastic parts (i don't remember if this was the car i had to boil parts for), the two speed blew my mind, and the chassis seemed to flimsy. but it went together well and it sat on the shelf until they closed the store in the mid 90's.

i'll never forget that odd car.

For me the PB cars were part of what was going at my club back in the 80's and did well in the right hands. I guess they were comparable to the early Cats, 834 Dog Fighters and Kyosho buggies of that time.
I've gladly driven my Mustang and Maxima more than a few times on tracks around Sydney recently and I like them. I think they would certainly out drive an 834.

Most people ditched the 2 speed pretty early on as it worked on centrifugal force (like any 2 speed i quess) so if you were on a slippery track it just spun the wheels up and went straight into second gear and bogged down, i do remember it working on a few tracks and just powering away down the straits. The other problem was batteries back then were alot different over the whole 6 minutes of race time (stock) and the last minute 2nd gear was just a wish as you couldn't get the thing up to speed to engage in the next gear.
But all in all it was quite a novel feature back in the day.

The 2 speed worked well.

I raced against these on a big 8th scale track. if adjusted right this thing was a missile. Had low down grunt out of the corner than cluncked into top gear. The 2 speed pinion had a massive ratio gap too. Like 11, 16 in one step. Remember this was in 32 pitch gears too.

On top of this well designed 2 shoe clutch it had just one belt. WE raced with only 1200mah cells so it was so light and very effeciant too. Was such a good design PB couldn't improve on it really.

Yes had flimsy arms but never breaked not here anway.

No its a single speed but still very quick with a Trinity 19T.

Jason and i were in a hurry to get up and running once i arrived at his house after my rush trip down to Sydney.

I was so shot after driving for 16 hrs so i went for a quick snooze and Jason got stuck into the mustang. Putting in a Single speed conversion so we had it running as quickly as possable..

I do have the 2 speed and a heap of 2 speed pinions. As well some SRM Split Ratios. Would love to get it running with the 2 speed some day.
