AYK BOOST BUILD

Post by Bullfrog »

Hi all, this is a build i'm currently working on, i use to own 2 of these buggys but i sold them quite a long time ago to a bloke that now we have become good friends, i've always love the Boost and a couple of years ago i got my hands on some parts that was going to help with the re-building, i'd like to thank Jason (Bormac), Darryn (RC Retro), Alex (Incredible Serious) and Tony (Dirt oval RC) for the help with parts and info.
The first thing i wanted to do was get rid of the chain drive and convert it to belt drive, so i got on the web and ordered some timimg pulleys and belts, i then got the original chain pulleys and removed the teeth, i then machined the pulleys to fit nice and tight (like a finger in a nuns bum) I then glued it all together with industrial super glue. (hopefully it should all hold together from what i've been told)
I then had to make a new bottom belt cover, i used 8mm clear perspex, i machine a groove to suit the belt, i also drilled and tapped it so i can screw it to the side chassis plates and the bottom chassis plate to it.
I then had to work out what steering i was going to use as i wasn't able to locate the original set up, i tried a few different types but i found the Avante set up was the best, it was also ball raced which made for nice smooth steering, all i had to do was make a new steering plate, as the Avante one was too long.

Hope you all enjoy, feel free to comment and advise on any tips that might help, more pictures to come of the build

cheers Bullfrog

Hello all, got some more pictures of the build, there’s a close up of the steering set up, I’ve also had to make a rear bumper as I could not find an original, I’ve also made a belt tension , and I couldn't find the original dog bones and you wouldn't believe my luck that I found the Avante cv joints fit perfectly and I can run standard hex head wheels now, hope you all enjoy the build so far.

Maybe you should make a little skidplate to protect the servo horn when bottoming out?

This is going to be the best Boost ever!

Good suggestion!

Perhaps even better would be to flip the servo saver upwards and run a long ball stud etc....alot less prone to damage that way.

Cheers

thanks guys for the info, i've got a bottom chassis plate that i'll use, that should protect the servo saver i think, correct me if i'm wrong, I brought 3 racing battery post that i'll use as well, and i made the battery strap from 4mm tint perspex.

more to come

That should be good
the perspex... I'm a bit worried about brittleness to be honest. Usually the baterry paltes push on the batteries which means the plates are allready in a stressed state.
