acetone on YZ10 chassis?

Post by npdp72 »

Has anyone tried soaking a vintage Yokomo chassis in acetone to remove superglue?
My 870c chassis could do with a cleanup but I'm not sure if it would have any negative affect on the GRP material?
Wouldn't want it to delaminate or do anything silly!

most carbon fiber and fiberglass varieties are resistant to acetone, if they are of epoxy construction(99% of them are). I know the acetone doesn't affect many of the parts from many brands, and don't suspect yokomo to be any different. I know the 870c fiberglass isn't hurt as I've used it before. Having said that, you could attempt to dab a spot in an inconspicuous area(like under a bulkhead) to see if anything happens.

Im not sure whats in it, but I use goof off to remove crud from plate material. Its excellent,, and dosent affect the carbon or epoxy at all. For super glue, I use brand name ca remover,, slow but works. Any hobby brand of ca should have their own brand remover as well,, and available at the LHS.

Acetone will soften certain epoxys if you leave it soaking. Mostly depends on the epoxy they used. Trial an error! I build composites for the motorcycle industry. And we use acetone to clean the tools after epoxy use and to soften epoxy bonds. We even use it to dissolve foam molds( plugs)

Well, I can report that an hour in a zip lock bag with a splash of acetone was enough to shift 25 years worth of super glue and various sticky tapes and velcro from my 870c chassis.
I'm very pleased with the results :D

just use a brand new razor blade at an angle. it'll take the glue right off. any left over residue could be cleaned off with some goo gone. or rubbing alcohol does the trick too.

I can say that rubbing alcohol doesn't do a thing vs. CA glue. CA glue laughs at rubbing alcohol, then uploads a "fail" video to YouTube. :P

I personally put a few tablespoons of acetone in a small margarine or yogurt container, then put the container along with the parts (either resting across the top of the container or beside it, but not submerged in it) inside a large plastic bag--a bread bag works fine, and is cheaper than a Ziploc bag--and tie it shut. After 24 hours, the acetone fumes will have sufficiently softened the CA bond or residue to remove tires from nylon wheels or easily rub it off a chassis.

I didn't have much success with the boiling or freezing methods.

Neither is as effective as acetone. :)
