I've just whipped the Leo 12 engine out of mine. From the look of the instructions [thanks to Incredible_Serious], the whole engine plate needed to be removed.
This was ok - I removed the tank, and the plate fixings, and removed the four screws which hold the plate and the transmission.
What I found isn't made clear in the instruction addendum, is that the four engine mounting bolts are in fact captive in the plate, so it could be possible to un-bolt engine without removing plate. See pic.
It'd be tricky to get to the rear two nuts especially without removing silencer but, if you prefer, it does look like it's an option.
