Cougar 2 works runner

Post by Retro rc »

Picked up this a while ago. It’s was advertised as a c2works and it was cheap so I thought why not?

It had the rocking horse poo rare alloy essentrics for the c2 on the gear box which was an added bonus.

Unfortunately when I got it it turned out to be just a cougar 2 with a (badly painted) works chassis and gearbox housing, no carbon towers, works suspension, ballraced steering or roller driveshafts.

Here's what it looked like.

So first things first gearbox strip down and a attempt at seeing how bad that chassis is under the paint.

So the chassis was a complete mess under the paint, looks like they’ve used some sort of filler to get rid of scratches, then undercoated and then a pretty thick layer of metallic purple.

This is what it looked like after a couple of hours sanding it back.

To be honest I’m liking the patena look of it as it is now.

Some new front end bits

And a nip u815k twin bearing set

Turns out the towers were painted fibre glass so stripped them back and front ends ready to put on the chassis

So I was lucky enough to find a couple nip u820p ball raced steering sets a while back and this buggy never had a set so on they go.

Here’s a pics of something a few out there might not know,Schumacher did a running change on the cougar 2 front arms. They added more material to the front on the inner hinge pin side of the arm.

I’ve circled it in the pic below. You can see the earlier right arm top of pic and the reinforced later left arm below.

For some reason every second hand cougar 2 I’ve bought seems to have a spare right arm with it but no lefts as you can see by my spares.

I’ve decided to go with a pro transmission for this buggy seeing as it’s a runner rather than use the original. Even though I’ve done a full rebuild on the diff and slipper, but thought ease of parts was worth it.

Gearbox assembled with new penguin gear cover and alloy accentrics. I used the original side plates but used a new plastic inner housing- the original had been hacked to check belt tension like a lot of us did back in the day

Rear end going on the chassis. I am using a set of used works rear arms off my original cougar rather that one of my nip sets and the rear bulk head was in mint condition so using that too. Adding a nip u859 rear anti roll bar set.

And a new set of u1692 driveshafts rather that running a set of roller driveshafts

All mounted up ready to go

Ok electronics time.

Got a set of jet concepts 3d printed lipo tray and radio trays,
Quality seems-ok even included a few spare servo mounts and thumb screws

Our vintage rules over here only allow the use of a kyosho g27 brushed stock motor so that will be combined with a hobby wing 1080 and a savox 1251mg servo.

Shock are on aswell got a set of u4152 small bore threaded on the front and was hoping to have the matching u4153 pair on the rear but when my order turned up they weren’t in the box, turns out they didn’t have the stock shown on the website but didn’t bother to tell me they weren’t being shipped….. that’s what I call good customer service🙄 so have a set of u3661 big bores on the rear for now

Finally got this ready to go, I managed to find a set of u4153 rear shocks from Japan of all places👍🏼. I also decided to change out the towers for nip carbon C2 works front and rear that I have a few sets of and painted up a body based on my original cougar from back in 1990. Here’s the buggy ready to go for this weekends race meeting.

Great build! The chassis looks great. I love the paintwork too.
