You know me, always the troublemaker ...

I know what it's like to be without your D.D.! You know, you could just take a week off and get her ripped, then you'll have no worries.

Be careful of going that low in the t-case, it will put alot of stress on your driveshafts , u joints and pinion. You must change the mount for the case, plus I have heard it will hum at speed. Gearsets are cheap and puts the reduction closer to the wheels. The t-case kits look like a easy way to go, but not always the best.

i got a transfer case bucket coming with the transfer case, i dont read alot about guys breaking toy stuff under samurais. really the only thing i'm worried about is ripping the frame, and i'll prolly end up using stock rubber mounts and just keep some spares. its not like i'm some hardcore dude anyway, i'll prolly wheel it 4-5 times tops this summer.

the orig owner had a 4:16.1 transfer case in it, and i'm sure it did fine, but i got a smoking deal on the 6.5. and the 6.5 and 4.11 gears its easier for me to get a good low ratio while keeping some highway drivability. (only a 2% change from stock in 2h) and those toy diffs have aussie lockers f&r as well. i dont really want to mess with them if i dont have to.

this is the biggest mistake i have ever made... i got totally swindled. there is absolutely no way the guy who sold this to me couldnt have known about some of the major issues i'm finding as i tear through it.

the thing is an absolute turd...

the front axle seals are toast, when i took off the hubs to swap the rotors the wheel bearings were sitting in a gear oil/knuckle grease soup... and one of the wheel bearing nuts was wrenched down so tight i'm amazed the wheel didnt lock up. and what do you do when you dont have the correct 54mm socket to tighten those nuts with? this guy used what looks to be a chisel... so... instead of just swapping rotors and calipers like i had originally intended, i have to rebuild the knuckles too.

so... after that kinda killed the brake job i decided to take out the transfer case and replace it with a real one, and it ends up the old tcase was literally held to the mounts with THREE bolts. two of them fingertight. both front and rear driveshafts have all sorts of different sized nuts and bolts holding them to the flanges, some loose as hell and others so tight i had to use visegrips on them... and the transmission to tcase shaft literally had every one of the 4 shaft flange bolts loose enough to where i could undo them by hand.

and on top of all that, the transfer case mounting points on the frame are in the same shape as the rear shock mounts... all broken and cracked at the frame, and go figure my new transfer case bucket doesnt line up to the mounts since somebody cobbled it all up...

the transfer case also had MAYBE a pint of fluid in it as well. nice chocolate milk looking...

so... i'm out of a d.d. for who knows how long while i figure out a way to uncobble this huge piece of crap.

Holy Crizzap Hoop! From the sounds of it you were lucky to make it home with the damn thing. Sorry to hear that the beauty was only skin deep. Now we know why it was so cheap and he was willing to negotiate on it.

Evil people suck!

wts873 wrote:I have been bitten by the sammy bug too. I just love little cars I guess :P . I found a 86 with a brand new hard top last year. It's still stock and I think I'm going to keep it that way. I agree that it is cheaper to buy a already built rig, but beware of the skills of who built it and how hard they were on it. My sammy was a retiree summer home vehicle and still has many miles left on it and old people see them as a pos so they will almost give them away 8).
I don't want to say it...... :(
