Agreed. Maybe it was standard back then. I don't know
But could I use a 24P gear as long as it was 65T ?
The kit came with an optional 63T gear but I do not know the specs and we did not have one

You might be able to find something that's a currently produced equivalent. It's a simple shaft mount spur gear from the looks of it. You'll need to know a few dimensions along with the gear pitch for example. Gear teeth also have different pressure angles (Generally 14.5° or 20° in this size range...

I have an Associated RC1 nitro RC car kit and am in need of the large spur gear.
The parts manual list it as 820-65 "Autolube spur gear 65 teeth"
Is it possible to purchase this gear or something similar?
