When ever you lower the gear ratio ( bigger pinion lower spur) you are pulling more amperage from speed control and battery and the motor is dissipating that energy in heat. If you have stock electronics be careful. I would stay under 23 tooth pinion. Motor shouldn't get hotter than 160.

I've been running mine now for about a month. Truck handles great but rear traction seems to be an issue. #55 pistons in the back shocks 25 wt oil camber links all the way out on wheel side and white springs helped quite a bit. 28mm ride height all the way around.
