Re: Old School Radios, giving another life into it.
Just took a look inside a "Brown Box" Futaba like the one MOmo posted a picture of (I happen to have one I cannibalized for parts long ago), and it looks like it doesn't have a separate RF board like the "Silver Box" model, which could make a conversion like I did a bit tricky. C...

Re: Who works in a hobby shop?
Was that the one in the old Tanasbourne mall? I used to hang out there, and went to a few of the races at the track out at the edge of the parking lot, although I wasn't old enough to work at the time.gomachv wrote:2 years at Aero Hobbies while in school

Re: Old School Radios, giving another life into it.
If you end up doing this please post a how to thread. I have one and a weekend of work would definitely be worth the look on all the racers faces when a buggy with an ancient radio wins. About a year ago, I converted my old Futaba wheel TX (the one in my profile pic) to 2.4GHz, and it works great. ...

Help identifying the tires in these pics
I've been looking for some buggy fronts that match the Pro-line Road Hawg/Road Rage rear tires for a while, and I've been coming up empty. I was just looking through some of the threads over in the Gallery, and I saw some pictures of pretty much exactly what I'm looking for in this thread : http://i...

Just an update... I've converted this TX to 2.4 GHz. Full write-up is over in the tech forum, here.

30 year old Futaba Silver Wheel radio converted to 2.4GHz
The only radio I've ever used to drive R/C cars is my first transmitter -- a Futaba FP-T3FG "silver wheel" that I got around 1982, with my first real R/C car (a Tamiya Sand Scorcher). I still use it today to drive my (now heavily modified) Edinger RC10 . I've been thinking for a while that...

Re: My first transmitter
If memory serves, the original wheel actually had 3 spokes with cutouts between them. Somewhere along the line that wheel broke, and I replaced it with one from a "brown box" model. (This model and the brown box used the same internal parts for the steering assembly, so they're interchange...

Re: My first transmitter
You cradle the box in your left hand, with your middle finger wrapped around the side to run the throttle, and hold the steering wheel with your right. It's basically the same position as a modern pistol-grip throttle, but the fingers of your left hand are straight against the back of the box instea...

My first transmitter
Thought some folks here might get a kick out of this... I bought this close to 30 years ago (well, actually my parents bought it for me ;) ) at the same time as my first real R/C car, which was a Tamiya Sand Scorcher. I'm still using it today to run my ~25 year old Edinger (for more pics of that, se...

Introduction, and pics of the Edinger I've had for 25+ years
More years ago than I care to admit, I got bit by the R/C cars bug. My first car was a Tamiya Sand Scorcher, and after that I got a Tamiya Grasshopper. I spent way too much time hanging out at the local hobby shop. ("Aero Sports and Hobbies" in the old Tanasbourne mall in Beaverton, Oregon...
