Does you motor have a recommended final drive ratio (FDR)
If so you can work out if that pinion is in the right range.

Spur gear / pinion x gearbox ratio= FDR

Sounds like you got the mesh correct, just make sure you can rock the spur gear for a full 360° rotation.
