How do you clean fibreglass Shocktowers?

Post by CNA75 »

As the title says. I'm trying to clean up some used fibreglass shock mounts which have browned up at the used spots. Does anyone know how to clean fibreglass shock towers up so that they look new again?

Thanks.

I just use simple green to clean them up and if the edge is banged up a little I hit it with a little sand paper and it usually looks pretty good if the tower hasn't been damaged too bad. To look like new again it has to be like new underneath the dirt and grime. Good luck.

Just like Al said, I use a sanding wheel on a Dremel to clean up the outer edges. If they're really bad, they absorb dye pretty well. I've turn a lot of mangy looking shock towers black and they look great.

Agreed; if they are really bad just dye them. But don't dilute the dye too much, and leave them in a long time or else they turn purple instead of black.

i throw them in with my white parts when i'm using oxy clean and warm water. i'll let them sit in there for a good while. i'll dump the water when it goes cold and redo it again with warm water and oxy clean. once the water goes cold again i'll take them out. 9 times out of 10 they're clean with very little scrubbing or no scrubbing at all.

To remove scratches on the smooth parts, try a polishing kit designed for model cars. You start out with a fine sanding film then go to a more and more fine grit. I think they go up to around 64000. It takes a while but the results can look like glass. If it's not scratched up just use some Meguiar's Plast-X polish or similar.
