The Novak NESC 4 is probably going to be the speedo, and probably the original Novak NER 27mhz receiver. I did run Tekin stuff really early on with my RC10, so I'm not sure if this stuff will be what I stick with or not. If I do, the case on the ESC needs to be polished and the wiring needs to be redone (new batt/mot wires and new receiver plug for Futaba and not KO.

i have a mint tekin mosfet esc, just like what's in your car now. still has the delta wires on it with a futaba g-plug. i have a mint 75 band tekin mini receiver (g-plug), too. don't know if they work or not though, i haven't tried them out.

i don't see myself using them since i don't really have anything old enough (and nice enough) to put them in. so if you'd have any interest down the road to go the tekin route, let me know if you could use these. i'll get you a better pic than this.

Here's the current status of the slow build of the Project 1987.

I found the Kyosho Gold shocks I was looking for, and even rebuilt them all with fresh internals. All of the shocks have Associated hardware, as I ran them back then. I need to reduce the height of the original spring perches to gain back some shock travel in the front, but they are pretty close to being done.

I'm still not happy with the bump steer in the front end, even after shimming the steering bellcranks up as high as I can go. Need to work a little more on that one, as I can't recall the geometry being that bad up front on the original.

New motor found in the shape of a 1987 Trinity Monster Horsepower stock motor. It needs some fresh brushes and springs to look new, so I'm now regretting selling my giant package of vintage brushes in the spring Garage Sale.

New Novak 4 is in place, and ready to wire up, though I still need to decide what Futaba plugs I want to use on this car (J or G), and replace one from the servo or ESC.

Still to come—mounting the Parma Monster wing and sideplates, steering linkage install, finding an appropriate 27mHz Novak receiver, and painting and mounting up a Protech 6160 when I get them in stock again. I did manage to get my hands on a set of Coca-Cola Autographics decals (thanks Jim), so the body will be completely accurate as my first Lexan paint job ever from 1985. Just a few more little things here and there, and this one will be completed.

Fun little project, but I'm looking forward to getting this finished.

Awesomely clean and I like the period-correctness of it all. Best use of Kyosho on a RC10 I've seen. In "1987" it's not so out of place something.

See, that's what I'm not sure of. I think I only used G-plugs for a couple of years, and I am positive I used J-plugs throughout late high school and college in EVERYTHING I raced, which puts me around '87+ and on. I need to research the plug transition from Futaba, because I only used G for a little while with my stock Futaba gear. When I went to Novak, it was all Js for me.

That info has to be somewhere on the internet.

For what it's worth, the Magnum Jr. I got X-mas of '86 had J-plugs.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I am pretty sure that period of time was a big crossover in what people were using. I never used G plugs after I went to electronic speed controls, which would have been right around 1986 or so.

I used a G plug for the entire duration I messed with RC cars until I turned 16 (1990) when I got a real car. I even had to retro fit a speed controller I got with a G plug since it wasn't that common anymore to use a G.

I used a Kraft KP3KW transmitter forever (I still have it here on the shelf), but once I got away from the giant stock Kraft receiver, and went to Futaba servos, I never used Kraft (now KO) plugs on anything. I raced most of the time in the 80s using Futaba servos and Novak/Tekin receivers on everything I owned. I'm 99% sure I'm going with J plugs on this car, as the G-plug receiver is something I definitely never used outside of the Moody sprint cars.

Looks great so far. I really like your attention to details and can;'t wait to see how the body turns out. Myu question is whethere the batteries are period. I remember those back around '94. I beleve the red 1400's would be more period correct

You are correct. I am putting together a set of new 7-cell red SCRs for the final product. These were the only assembled round cells I had for relative shock settings.

Very nice build. I'm sure the J plug was out then! I do think you need the red 1200 SCR batteries. I think the 1400's were a year or two later. I'm sure I used 1400 SCR's in 88. I wish I could remember everything!

It would be nice if we could have a section dedicated to battery and electronics time line!

If someone could look through all the old Car Action mags in the What's New section, we could get a rough time line of all the items.

The time line could be done by year and then each month.

I am digging a bit on the battery timeline, because I have wondered the same myself.

I have an early 1998 magazine with Trinity ads showing 1200SCRs and 1700SCEs available, which is accurate to my memory. I have a set of Trinity 1200SCRs here, but honestly don't remember when they came out. It's only a 6-cell pack, but it will have to do.
