1st Generation Ultima CVD Question

Post by Diggley »

Has anyone perfomed an easy (no mod) installation of MIP CVD's for the 1st gen Ultima?

What fits?

Are there part #'s available for a conversion?

I know there was never a direct fit set available.

I'm sure I've seen the mod in another post, but I'm not sure which one.

I'd like to adapt a set to my Ultima Baja conversion. Besides the fact they eliminate most of the slop, I love how they look on a scale project.

So the RB5's will fit with no issues?

Oh, by the way...sweet car!

thanks

yes they fit no problem, make sure its the stock rb5 axles, NOT the world's rear axles, or the lazer zx5

they fit no problem, but need a spacer (comes with complete set. I suggest the hopup clamp on axles, works well

Alright alright... The RB5 cvds form Kyosho are $50.00  I cannot seem to find any made by MIP either. What other options do we have? I'll convert hubs/bearings to something whose offset matches the original, just to get something more standard on there. Seriously, $50 bones? That's TWO sets of CVD's!!!

When I get home, I;m going to compare my RC10 universals axle length to the Ultima dog bones I have. There's got to be a better/ more cost effective way!

You will need the 62,5 bone and the shorter la231 axle then you will have exactly the same lenght as the w5061.

Mip did sell uj´s but they where listed as "for inferno 10"

I actually prefer the longer axles and adding a spacer: this compensates for the offset loss with 2.2 RB5 wheels.

The CVD's are nice but on my last off-road race (phew, already almost a year ago) they were the items failing.
The crosspin inside the CVD part came out! I know a bit of threadlock should fix that...
But for me, the cheaper and reliable way is: plain old dogbones and a HPI rear axle: direct-fit plus it uses a crosspin for fitting hex, and the hole for the crosspin is further out so it allows adding a spacer just like on the CVD's.

Thanks isobarik and Mr.Ed. I probably should have been more clear. I'm trying to avoid using expensive kyosho universals or parts period. I should also say that I want to use the same duratrax nitro evader rims I'm using for my RC10. (I looked, and it looks like the offset is similar to the ultima rim.) I looked at my RC10 Universal, and with a RC10 hub it would work, but I'll have to do a little modifying to get it to fit in th outdrive better. Prooblem here is that I lose some width. Any other ideas?

I think the biggest issue is the spherical part of the CVD won't fit your ultima outdrive cups.

There is at least one other drive cup , I think it's from HPI but not sure, which bolts on the geardiff axlesand is lightly larger inside; so that works with RC10 bones. But if you use the balldiff you're out of luck.
