Mega Budget T-Maxx

Post by PBR Allstar »

And by Mega Budget, I mean Mega SMALL Budget.

I know they aren't really vintage by our standards, but this is a very early '99 model. A friend of mine gave it to me about two years ago in a sorry state of repair, missing radio, dirty, etc. I tossed it up in the rafters where I rediscovered it last night.

After I drug it down I thought, "what the hell am I going to do with this?" (just in case you have this thought in the future Todd about that '10 you're getting from Mark! LOL) I figured if the motor breathed, then I'll mess with it, if not it's going in the pile. after I cleaned the sludge out of the bottom of the tank, and the matching sludge from the fuel line I checked the glow plug, good, okay, a few drops of o'donnell's down the hole and hit the button on the traxxas starter thing. It wanted to run! the TRX .15 lit almost instantly! I finished cleaning up the chassis and called it a night.

Fast forward to after work today, I made a quick trip to Hobby Town to see if they had anything that might make my Maxx seem a little less like it was abused then tossed in the rafters. Low and behold, the bargain bins were deep with T maxx parts!
Parma Xciter body NIP $10
stock cheveron tires mounted on chromies $5 a pair
bumper set $2

And this is the best part, A complete set of associated shocks for T-Maxx that are missing the mounting eyes for ----- $10 !!!!!!

after my roughly thirty five bucks at Hobby town I came home and ordered a forward only shaft for the transmission (I'm putting a 2ch radio in it so best get rid of reverse and the big steel shift mechanism) and I dug out a couple of 2275 120oz traxxas waterproof servos that came on a car I bought a while back. Couple days and I'm going to have a pretty cool nitro basher I think!

Pics to follow!

looking forward to pics!
Man those where some awesome deals you found at your LHS. A t-maxx was my first real nitro MT. Loved it. Upgraded it to a 2.5R eventually. That pro .15 will do very well with a FOC and a good pipe. Watch your temps though.

Watch ebay for TI skid plates from... crap can not remember the name right now...
either way those saved me from breaking bulkheads.

Is this the widemax or the original Ford? you sure you wanna take out reverse for a basher? you got some great prices on parts. Seems they made a ton of aftermarkets for these and they still litter the clearance bins  Can't wait for pix...

from what I gather it's an original before the wider arms, I think it's a pretty early run, when the shock towers still had the round body mounts instead of the I-beam style. The ditching reverse thing, nothing I've ever owned with the exception of my Tamiya Falcon, and my slash have had reverse, so I don't think I'll miss it, plus the amount of weight is sheds from rotating parts in the tranny has to be worth it. Not to mention all the servos were toast and I only had two of the waterproof 2275's laying around so that spurred the decision even further.

As far as the shocks go, as soon as I get the end eye's for the assc. shocks the stockers will be up for grabs, they are in nice shape as well.

Only reason for asking about reverse is I have a few for backyard bashing and it always seems to get pulled up to a tree or a truck or the barn or the garage or the....you get the picture  . Back when this model was new it was pretty fun to run it out with the others on the offroad. Put a set of trinity blue 'lowering' springs on half the shocks and dropped it down to a respectable height so it wasn't so easy to tip over and ran the snot outta it. Let us know how it goes.

My son and I snagged and early "narrow" Maxx a few years ago. It was pretty beat up, no front bumper or diff, missing the front center driveshaft too. It had (and still has) RPM arms, AE .15 motor, and all 8 AE blue shocks on it. We did paint up a new body for it, we just ran it the other day, still a fun truck.
