New Member/ new RC10B4.1 Brushless Owner

Hi all, new to the forum, and getting back into the sport after 10 years, well, cars at least. I've been flying RC helicpters since 2002, so I've been able to keep up with the changes in transmitter and battery technology.

Anyway, I'm currently deployed to Afghanistan(US Army) and there is an outdoor track at our location, so I decided to order an RC10B4.1 Brushless RTR, 2 Team Orion 2400mah 7.2 nimh batteries, a tamiya/deans adapter, and a duratrax onyx 100 charger. I wanted lipo's, which are what I use in the electric heli's I brought with me, but I cant get them shipped here, as they are considered hazmat and no one will send them.

While I'm waiting for everything to arrive, I've been trying to look at upgrades, but it's been so long since I've had anything to do with cars, I dont know where to start. Can anyone make any reccomendations? It's going to be strictly track use, no bashing.

first thing you need to do is ditch any tamiya plugs, an adaptor won't help. the lipo/esc draw will melt them.

if it's track use stick with the factory setup (it's good) until you find out what it needs.
what surface is the track? find out what tires the other (fast) guys are using and get a set.
2400mah is small, so you'll be recharging between rounds, you will want to add weight to the car aswell since the batt is so light.
next time order some 4000-5000mah lipos.

the rtr b4.1 is a pretty nice car right out of the box, i borrowed one a few weeks (only mod was a 10.5t viper bl system) ago when mine was down and i tq'd and won the main with it.
so it's ready to race as is.

The B4 rtr is a good start. Most of the guys at my track running the rtr car ditched the stock steering servo for something faster and more reliable. For the money it's hard to beat the Savox 1258.

Honestly, for bashing, keep the B4.1 as is, it's perfectly potent stock! First upgrade would indeed be a faster servo especially if you're flying helis and are used to fast stuff. Other than that, really, nothing, just stock up on rear tires, a great all-round tire for not-so-clean tracks is Proline Bowties, they work fantastic on "rough" grounds thanks to their "traction"-oriented pattern and their round carcass that absorbs ruts better than other profiles.

As I mentioned, nobody will ship lipos to my location...in Afghanistan..they are hazmat...The 2400mah Nimh's were part of a package deal with the buggy.

Anyway, thanks for the info, definately enough to get me started.
The track is dirt, actually, it's pretty soft, almost like talcom powder.

The tires and the servo definately sound like my next purchase.

Forgot to ask, 2.2" tires are the right size for that buggy, right? Also, when ordering wheels, are dish vs spoked purely a matter of personal preference, or is there some functional reason for one over the other.


Fixing to order a servo, and am probably going to go with the Savox SC-1258TG titanium geared servo, unless there are any other suggestions to consider.

I'll try to post some pics of our track so you guys can see how we're staying amused between missions.

yes - 2.2" - and spokes vs disc is a cosmetic preference, I like discs better personnally as I feel there is less place to store gunk in.

1258 is a killer servo but might be slightly overkill... but it'll certainly cut the mustard!

I had considered having someone send over a couple of lipos in a care package, but I wonder how much customs is watching what people are sending us. I've seen a couple of boxes get here that were opened and re-sealed...eh, one thing at a time.
