Starting point for a race setup?

Post by Jay »

I've got a Worlds car that I'm going to be running in Mod Buggy at my local track. As of right now it's completely stock as in no wheel conversions or up dated parts. I'm mostly looking for camber, shock POS, oil & spring ideas. Just some where to start. My track is Dry, hard packed medium traction with some dust on top. We do wet the track, but we have been having issuses with the clay for the past year with it not holding water and getting really dusty. Thanks for the help

A little more info on my car... and a bump, hopefully someone can help!

Right now I have black springs in front and green in the rear. I'm going to try out -.5 camber in the front and -1.0 in the rear as a starting point. I'm thinking 27.5wt in the front and 30-32.5wt in the rear? I really want to rebuild my shocks (never opened them) but I'm racing tomorrow. I've ran the car before and for the most part it feels good, but now I'm running a 13.5 instead of a Tamiya Sliver can motor, and I know with the extra speed that car isn't going to be as easy to drive as it was before.

with that setup you are going to have alot of front end bite,im running silver springs with 30 #2 pistons in the front ,green springs 20
#3 pistons in the rear...... try switching your you oil weights around run #2 pistons front and back camber both at 1.5 with 1.0 toe in start with shocks in the middle hole on the tower ,drive hight front arms level, rear bones level, hope this helps but to be honest tire choice is 90% of your setup, also let your slipper slide a lil on a dusty track its one of your best friends
have fun and drive it like you stole it

Thanks for the reply. I think I have the extra springs, but I KNOW I don't have any pistons. Are they still available? How about the springs? I'll be running on some old Losi IFMAR Pins (Or something that looks similar) Hole Shots normally hook up pretty good on our track, but until I can get the B4/B44 parts I'm stuck with what I've got. I love beating people with OLD cars! I also have a XXX-4 G+... a car people LOVE to hate. Through the whole A-main people kept saying it was made of glass, it was gonna break, and that the XXX-4 isn't good on anything other than perfect tracks.... 3 A-main wins later the crowd kinda got quite. I'll post a race report with pics (if my buddy brings his stuff)

ya i belive tower still has them ,in the shock rebuild kit ,you can always drill the piston in a pinch ,than pick up some spares later they are not hard to come by.
ya the goold ol days of mini pins and square fuzzys still run the ol faithfull holeshots to this day,i had a xxx-4 still wish i had it ,it was a fragile car if you drove it like a 8th scale buggy, but if you hit your matks and stay off the pipe it was awsome, one day i hope to get another, you can always change your oil according to you piston hole smaller hole lighter oil etc etc etc
post pics we all love pics

Gonna ask a stupid question here but what difference does the piston make? Is it damping amount essentially?

short answer yes it restricts the speed of bound and rebound in the shocks, other than the springs,if you didnt have them when your shocks compressed than extended you would have a bouncy effect that wouldnt stop till the the springs released all there energy ,good example remember the ol grasshoppers and how the back end bounced all around, the pistons kinda like a valve that is only opened to certain extent, smaller hole less open, large hole etc etc ,there are some shocks that do not have the piston but they work on a friction platform where the use extra extra heavy oil almost like a grease such as a 10,000 wt and o-rings to act as the valve ,and as far as i know only used for oval racing
