just got a Stampede

Post by razorofpow »

Just got my first Stampede, I believe its the XL-5 (i bought it used). It has the XL-5 Esc, but I have not pulled the motor to see which one it is yet.
Any upgrade ideas? as well good places to buy from?

Anything but the stock "Titan" motor (which shall be called "Titanic" instead)

Anywhere that doesn't sell traxxas

More seriously, to bash around, get yourself an ezrun 60A with the 4300kv mill and it'll be already way faster than needed for $60 or so. Have fun!

I found out it has a 20t stinger motor it seems slow but I have heard that could be my 6cell 2200mah nihm battery making it slow

it is slow to start with... you can get a few more rpms with a better pack, but it still is a very very mild motor :)

I agree, even as a newbee a good 15 years or so back I found a fresh 20t stinger to be quite slow. Upgrading to a decent 16 turn motor made a huge difference.

I agree with the masses on the Stinger. A buddy of mine bought one real cheap this summer. We tried all the "secret" tweaks that were successful on the Titan, but that 20t just wouldn't get out of it's own way. Even a decent 19-turn spec motor would run circles around it.

Looks like the same old 540 motor Tamiya has been using for centuries. If that's the case, don't expect it to be any faster than the Stinger.

I would go with the Titan 12T motor or even better yet, a good 19-turn or hotter mod motor. Brushless is really the way to go, but you can find good mod brushed motors nowadays for dirt cheap and they will work with your current electronics.

well I put in a 12t Titan for now just trying to gear it right, I am unsure how many teeth my spur gear has (it doesn't say on it, and I keep losing count)... It has a higher top end now, but is still slow off the line. I tried dropping down to a 14 tooth spur but it was to small so I couldn't get a good mesh.

The Titan 550 just isn't a great motor. The best sealed can brushed motor I've ever run is the Sport Tuned. It's got some good pep on 2s lipo, and the runtimes in my rc10 on a 5000mah spc are around 45 minutes. It 's also rather torquey, so it isn't too picky about gearing.
Try the stock Stampede xl5 gearing on that Titan, it should be a good starting point.
With proper maintenance, you can still get decent life and performance from a Titan.
. . . you have Associated Green Slime for brains. And not even new Green Slime, but old gooped out Green Slime.
