Re: Brushless in old buggies - bring me up to speed
i was once down that road before, my first BL combo was a Hobbywing, it would all the stuff mentioned above, decided to try Tekin RS Pro, had a blast but as compared to the HW, im more happy with it as i do not have to worry on the ESC from overheating. JMHO though, but maybe you just need to get the correct setup on the esc. anyway, which ever you choose it will definately reduce your cleaning/maintenance on the motor due to no more Brush/comm maintenance needed. just clean/Lube the bearing and thats it.
goodluck.

I'm sure when I weigh up the reliability and cost it will be BL!
Anyone have any comments on HPI motors?

Hpi motors are all either Castle or Hobbywing rebrands.
+1 on the Novak SS Pro. It's actually still in production.

Thanks. I was a little put off Novak after some comments here. However I did a search... they do LOOK well made...

SS8.5 Pro Brushless Motor is 8.5 turns, and similar to a 15-17-turn mild-modified brush motor.
SS10.5 Pro Brushless Motor is 10.5 turns, and similar to a 19-turn brush motor.
SS13.5 Pro Stock Brushless Motor is 13.5 turns, and similar to a 27-turn racing stock brush motor.
SS21.5 Pro Brushless Motor is 21.5 turns and is the slowest motor in the SS Pro Series.
So....
Am I correct to say thier SS8.5 will be safe in my RC10?

An 8.5 may be a little much. I think my 17.5 is plenty.
If you find a 17.5 DODC spec motor that looks like an SS, it probably is.
Make sure to get the pro version if you want adjustable timing.

This is confusing! They say (quoted above)...
"SS8.5 Pro Brushless Motor is 8.5 turns, and similar to a 15-17-turn mild-modified brush motor. "
^
So is this rubbish?

Re: Brushless in old buggies - bring me up to speed
I'd run something between 13.5 and 17.5 quite happily in any old buggy. Another thing to think about, is sensored or sensorless.
For something just to run about with a decent turn of speed you can't go wrong with something like this : http://www.modelsport.co.uk/speed-passion-cirtix-stock-club-race-ultra-s-man-13.5t/rc-car-products/366854
Very cheap for a complete system, and sensored too
Paul.

Smoothness off the line and at low speed.

My Traxxas 10 turn 3500kv acts more like a 6 or 8 turn modified motor...
