Post by rccars4sal »

Did anybody make a slipper clutch for cat3000? Factory option, aftermarket?

Schumacher had one for the 2000 - 3000 series.
Got one mounted in a build.

Building on the above post , the CAT 2000 series (original, EC, ECS, SE, & 98) and the CAT 3000 share a lot of compatible parts. The following may be helpful.

On page 2 of the CAT 3000 manual, the U823 slipper clutch and the U2102 torque distribution system are "Speed Secret" upgrades. Following the discussion in the thread below, U823 probably includes all of the necessary standard slipper parts but is difficult to obtain.

http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24724

Based on the manual, the stock CAT 3000 uses the fixed gear layshaft (U1751) and one way clicker front pulley (U1498). The CAT 2000 ECS also used a fixed gear setup and U1498 front pulley. The rest of the CAT 2000 series used a slipper with the U1498 front pulley. Unlike the CAT 2000 series, two additional flanges (U2285) are shown on the front pulley in the CAT 3000 manual and exploded diagram.

As suggested in the the above post, it would probably be easier to find a stock slipper used in a kit. However if it helps, the standard slipper for the CAT 2000 required the following parts.

U730 Thrust bearing
U855 Thrust Plate and Drive Hub - Slipper
U856 Repair kit Q.C Slipper
U1497 Layshaft CAT 2000
U1501 Layshaft Pulley and Flanges - CAT 2000
U1540 Speed Pack - Short M3 Pan Hd
U1633 Speed Pack - Small Pins (pk)

Examples of the parts can be found in the CAT 2000 EC manual:

CAT 2000 EC slipper and CAT 2000 ECS non slipper
http://www.retromodelisme.com/scan_pages/3610/cat-2000-ec-schumacher-page-7.html

CAT 2000 EC exploded view
http://www.retromodelisme.com/scan_pages/3619/cat-2000-ec-schumacher-page-16.html

Schumacher offered a variety of aftermarket drivetrain parts for the CAT 2000 series. These included the aluminum one way roller clutch layshaft pulley at the following link. Please NOTE, I do not know if there will be a compatibility problem here. This was originally intended as an upgrade for the CAT 2000 series, which does not use the thin flanges (U2285) with the front pulley (U1498) that the CAT 3000 uses.
http://www.retromodelisme.com/voit/mini_page.php?page=3641&grand=1&mag=1

There was also an alternative fluid based slipper called the viscous drive unit (aka VISCO (U1787)). According to Schumacher, "With a viscous drive, the torque applied is proportional to the difference between motor speed and wheel speed." This slipper is compatible with the different front and rear pulleys if the corresponding layshaft is used. For the fixed plastic layshaft pulley (probably U1897) or the one way plastic layshaft pulley (U1498), VISCO drive layshaft (U1788) is required. If using the one way alloy layshaft pulley (U1910), then VISCO drive layshaft (U1911) is required.

Later, Schumacher introduced the adjustable braking system (ABS (U2101).) This replaced the fixed layshaft and pulley combination with one that allowed for adjustment to the amount of front braking via a oneway pulley, slipper rings, a spring, and a nut. Then came the torque distribution system (T.D.S (2102)) that included the U2101 ABS system for the front braking but and a drive slipper that worked (i.e. slipped) for rear wheels only. Or as Schumacher explained it "… allows adjustment of the torque distribution between front and rear wheels." The TDS also allowed for locking out the slipper via longer screws to connect the slipper plates.

A list of aftermarket parts and corresponding bag/catalog descriptions are below:

U823 QC Slipper Clutch + Gears (req U1497)
U1787 Viscous Drive Unit - Universal (requires layshaft)
U1788 Layshaft, Viscous Drive - CAT 2000
U1897 Fixed Drive Pulley
U1910 Alloy One way Pulley Set - SST/CAT (NOTE: required either layshaft U1912 or U1913)
U1911 Layshaft - One Way Viscous Drive (NOTE: this layshaft requires pulley U1910)
U1912 Layshaft One Way + Slipper
U1913 Layshaft One Way + Non Slipper
U2019 15T Alloy Rear Pulley - SST/CAT (alloy version of U1501 pulley)
U2101 A.B.S System - SST (NOTE: works with standard kit rear pulley but layshaft (U2142) and front pulley (U2139) are specific
U2102 T.D.S Torque Distr System - CAT (NOTE: Specific layshaft (U2136), pulleys (U2139 & U2140) and slipper plates (U2141)

The plates at the above link are for the TDS only and would not be compatible with the stock setup. The front pulleys, the rear pulleys, and the layshafts are different.

Im wondering why my search results dont list all the goodies from overseas... Do these sellers just not have their settings so that the item is available for world wide viewing?

Correct. Some sellers do not want to post outside of the UK. Need to have a search that includes .co.uk. Sometimes sellers are willing to ship to the USA but it is often more expensive than the part you are looking to obtain. The BST section is an option as well.

For completeness, my earlier post now includes the VISCO slipper information.

I've been having the same problem I think with the last eBay update they've changed something I used to have to click the "see all international items" but it doesn't anymore and I'm sure I'm missing loads of stuff.

Ps rccars4sal ignore that pm I hit the wrong button

Have either of you found items of this ilk in the BST section?

Im new to schumacher, and so have never shopped for any parts for them. I just recently got a very nice cat 3000,, and noticed immediately that there is no slipper clutch on it. Not too desperate as it will just be used for patterns for cf parts initially,, but eventually it will get blinged out.

Interesting that it uses a modern layout with front mid motor and long wide suspension,, yet no slipper clutch! Not sure how successful the design was, as it looks like a smooth track type buggy with the low and inboard upper shock mount position. Yet the long arms suggest rough track capability.

Not sure if you are aware but Fibre-lyte offers a range of carbon parts for the different Schumacher models.

Not to get too far off topic but have you considered a universal chassis that might work for the CAT 2000 and CAT 3000 series? It may be challenging but could provide a unique option for refurbishing runners.

What would be the difference between 2000 and 3000 chassis? Motor and cell positions? Im sure it could be done. Theoretically most vintage runners will have a lexan pan so the extra holes would be less noticeable.

Agreed. However, the 2000 series and 3000 series may differ in the amount the differentials are angled. There should be others on the forum who could verify this. A new thread pertaining to this topic may yield some answers / measurements.

Normally the option should still be in Ebay's Advanced search page...
