x2

...also, if an ad shows up while abp is active, you can usually hover over the ad and a block ad dialogue pops up so you can make it go away.

Adblock and Ghostery. Search Ghostery and install it as well.

a lot of times those are caused by malware that installs extensions in your browser to pull in the ads. It's pretty simple to remove them. Open your browser, find "settings" in in the nav buttons (where that is depends on the browser, but they all have "settings"). In settings you'll find a tab or button for "extensions". Once you click that you will get a list of extensions that are installed. For the most part, unless you've specifically installed it (ie: google docs), you can get rid of anything you don't recognize. Every time I've gotten the popup hell problem, that's fixed it.

A lot of the good security software blocks those, but not always, as there are legit automatically installing extensions (like the example above).

Hope that helps

Choose the addon NoScripts as well.

Both NoScripts and Ghostery have to be "taught", which is to say, they pull up all the nonsense and block every bit of it, which in some cases will prevent you from viewing as site or it's contents. You then open the blocked menu (icon in your toolbar) of each addon and allow the items needed to view a page or site. Generally, you will only have to allow a few, site based scripts for a site to view properly, leaving behind all the ad and tracker scripts.

There is also a cookie blocker you can use to further lock down your system and what sites you give access to.

You know it Dave. Adwcleaner is good also. But Rod is right as well, so we have to find the fine line.

I also use CCleaner, along with Glary Utilities. Careful with that one, you can delete some stuff you should not.

Pop ups could also be caused by malware. Run a scan using Spybot search and destroy or Malwarebytes.

And I agree with the Ccleaner and Ghostery recommendations.
