Some weirdness going on here... those ally front uprights are nice (Hotbox?), two steering servos, and what looks to be a home-made bumper.

Yes there are. I mentioned it in my original post.

According to Ian Diboll ‘Twin servos were due to the kick backs being very weak until we started putting more bands on…’

It is very strange how our brains work sometimes. It is hard to imagine someone doing all of the work to add a second servo when all they needed was to stiffen the crashback system. It just seems that anyone smart enough to rig dual servos would have noticed the crashback system moving and installed a stiffer o-ring loooooong before adding another servo.

The original uprights were quite prone to breaking too - especially where the rubber bands were wrapped around, so stiffer bands quite likely resulted in more frequent breakages. Maybe that's why the alloy uprights were used - bling wasn't such a thing then...
