Tucsonan's Desert Dirt Machines

Post by Tucsonan »

This is my rebuilt RC10 Graphite. The shocks, turnbuckles, body and battery box are modern. Pretty much everything else is original or vintage hopups that I bought between 89 and 93.

Details:

The Buggy
1989 RC10 Graphite kit number 6030
This was the ball bearing kit
At this time it still has vintage era bearings although at least a few probably were AE replacements I bought back in the day.

The Electronics
Tekin Pro Tempfet 300
Reedy Modifieds Outlaw Stock 27T with 36 degrees of timing
AirTronics XL 2P 75 MHz transmitter
AirTronics 92623 2 channel receiver
AirTronics 94102 servo

The Mods
Associated replacement Graphite chassis plate - The original was getting chipped and delaminated at the leading corners. I kept it as a spare.
Associated RC10T front shock tower. It worked with the 1.32 long rear shocks, which is how I used to race it.
FANRC Hard Anodized replica 1.32" Rear shocks at all four corners. I still have the gold shocks but they need a rebuild.
Trinity vintage 2.2 wheels front and rear
Trinity vintage tires front and rear
FANRC titanium turnbuckles and ball cups
FANRC battery box - I didn't want to hack up the vintage box to fit NiMH batteries
Houge bellcrank steering
Andy's brand rear arms
Andy's brand large front bumper
Associated Gen1 ATC Stealth transmission
Associated gold anodized rear motor protector
FANRC Viper body and wing

Additional notes and upgrade plans
The buggy is complete but lacks body posts. I decided I don't want to cut post holes in the new body. I'll fab up something to velcro the body to the chassis, probably out of polycarbonate or kydex.
The antenna is folded back through the rear shock towers and threaded the upper hole in the rear of the motor mounting plate.
I will be adding JConcepts yellow 2.2 inch wheels and modern rubber
I'll also be converting to the FANRC 3/16" Worlds style U-joint axles - The JConcepts wheels I have only fit the 3/16" axle not the 1/4". Also the FANRC axles are 1.5mm longer which reduces the risk of popping a dogbone end out of the outdrives. This will have to wait until I have all the shims, spacers and bearings needed for the conversion
Reedy Radon2 17T brushed motor
shorty lipo battery holder for 2S shorty packs. It bolts up in front of the rear bulkhead, but a good piece of stiff foam might work well enough.

I've run the car a little bit in its current form. I forgot how much you steer this car with the throttle on loose or sandy dirt. On a sandy softball field it was pretty much a drift car.
I'll post more photos as I update the buggy.
