Kyosho Ultima

In 1987 Kyosho released a 1/10 2wd electric off-road racing buggy called the Ultima, a model that would not only win them a World Title at the hands of Joel Johnson but live on through half a dozen future iterations. The foundation for the first Ultima was a slender formed aluminum chassis with pressed in strengthening ribs and die-cut lightening voids. The remaining, primarily molded EX66 nylon components, included the single piece front bulkhead that led to the lower a-arm and fixed plastic camber link suspension system with inline carriers and knuckles. Guiding the car was a twin bellcrank steering system with adjustable tie rods, built-in servo saver and standard front sway bar to provide additional control, all tucked under a plastic radio plate that held the transverse mounted battery and remaining electronics in place while doubling as a chassis stiffening upper deck. Mirroring the front end, out back was a lower a-arm and fixed plastic camber link suspension connected to the chassis by the rear bulkhead and axle stopper. Plate aluminum shock towers front and rear doubled as upper camber link mounts and supported a set of red anodized, oil-filled, aluminum bodied coilover shocks with adjustable collars. At the tail end an aluminum rear guard protected the motor which bolted to an aluminum motor plate on the transmission and delivered motor-vation through a bevel geared differential out to a pair of metal dogbones, past the nylon hub carriers and spinning a set of directional "blade" style nylon wheels with Bridgestone 340-30/20 Sand Super square block rear tires and 185-20/60 Sand Super rib tires up front. A clear lexan body with wing, molded plastic roll cage and mini front bumper, Mabuchi RS540 motor, three step mechanical speed controller, and full bushing set completed the unassembled kit which was sold less radio:

This is the most anticipated run of vintage ads for me. I like the Schumacher ads more, but I overdosed on those long ago.

I probably could have knocked out a year of college with the time I spent staring at those 2 page Tower Hobbies ads featuring the Turbo Ultima.
