Tell me about your first RC-10

Post by shodog »

Kinda along the lines of the why do you like vintage thread, this one is to talk about your first RC-10

The first time I saw an RC-10 was at a local race in Carmel California. At the time I was fielding a Fox and it was pretty competitive against what was out there. Then some guy shows up with an RC-10. During practice heats this guy is tearing up the track leaving everyone in the dust. Needless to say he cleaned up the a-main. I knew from then on I needed one. I begged my parents for days and finally they gave in and bought a 6010 kit. Bearings were prohibitively expensive and none of my Fox bearings would transfer over so I was stuck with a bushing car for a while. My first run of it was dissapointingly slow but after I got bearings and a cool team losi motor it was tearing it up.

After High school I gave the RC-10 along with a bunch of other vintage Tamiyas to my brother. shortly after that his garage was burglarized and lost for ever.

Hmmmmm... my first RC10 was purchased in 1984, a few months after my brother's first Tamiya Subaru Brat. I built it straight out of the box, with the ceramic wiper speed control, and a 6-cell stick pack. The second body I ever painted was the stock Protech in a pretty cool Coca-Cola scheme. Thinking back, it was pretty nice for a 14-year old's first shot at a single action airbrush.

We raced outdoors and I had zero ability to understand what made the car work and what needed to be done to make it stick. That car had perpetual oversteer, no matter what we did to it. Tires were hard and limited, and didn't work very well. It was an event whenever the wings even stayed in the wing tubes.

My dad, who is a machinist, and has never been accused of under-engineering anything, made us a more solid mount for the ceramic throttle control. It was a MASSIVE chunk of CNC aluminum, that made the car ridiculously heavy. Looking back on that makes all of us cackle with laughter.

I remember the Christmas I got my first Novak T4. I had it installed in the car in no time and pajama-clad, my brother and I stood in the driveway jumping the car over renegade snow drifts.

Looking back 23-odd years, my brother and I both realize how important those early years of playing with these things meant to us. He is an IT-manager, and I am a Creative Director, and every day we both use problem solving skills we developed with R/C cars as kids. We have even used car setup and troubleshooting abilities with REAL race cars, as well, and have remarked that they were pure childhood R/C car learned abilities.

It's unfortunate that kids today would rather play video games and download ringtones, but I won't preach from that soapbox today.

I had progressed over the years through the nikko line with many cars. The Aero was a lower end car and I finished with a "$100+" Rhino!!!! from kmart.
The Rhino was similar to Hornets.
Now this Rhino (i would kill for one now) was the first car that amazed me with technology and speed.
A ditch at friends summer camp broke the front arm. Glue held her together for a couple more months, then reality set in.. It was time to move on.

A local hobby shop opened roughly 1988.
It was a great time in life.
Hair metal was playing on the radio. Country music sounded like country. People were were skidz pants. And most were unaware that spandex was just about to hit the scene! And RC cars where rated on their "to scale speeds"

A blackfoot got the attention of my father and I. We bought it and then worked together building it.. it was a great time of father and young son bonding. I started getting into racing at the LHS. so new rims and low profile tires went on the truck. It was a great runner.
Then I needed more!

It was fall of 1990..
I was 11 years old and in 6th grade. It turned into a family event.. My dad, mother and I all come walking into the hobby shop. Pre San Jose Sharks wear.
We all stood there staring at the box not believing the price. But I had been buttering them up for months.
They were swayed!
My dad was pumped about oil shocks and stealth trans building.
A couple years went on.. I raced and what not. Junior High came. Girls starting growing bweebs and that was it.

Last Christmas straighten stuff up around my moms I ran across my rc10. One thing leads to another. I found this site. I've had a tower hobbies box at my door every week for the past 3 weeks.

First RC was my RC10 T2, which i still have.

Needed something that would take the abuse and stand up to a novice driver. I later got a b3, then sold that for my B4.

So here is what I have in the AE stable:

RC10- (original 6 gear, never run)
RC10CE- freebie! I plan to restore for racing
RC10T- Freebie from a friend (body still unpainted)
RC10T2- First RC still have it
RC10GT- converted from "tub" chassis to the plate style
RC10B4- Team car w/ the FT upgrade
RC10TC3- converted to Rally (now in pieces)
RC10TC3FT- Raced for a few seasonsl, looking to sell

Hmmm perhaps I like AE too much!

well, i got my first rc10 in 92. it was a graphite team car, and i still have it, sitting in my basement. when i started racing in 91, i was running dirt oval with my junior t. there was a lot more guys running the edm's. so, i got my feet wet with the truck, then jumped up to the modifieds the following year.

i guess i just wanted to run with the big dogs.

here's my team car from 93.

My first RC10 was actually my shelf queen. I bought it about 5 or 6 years ago. It was mint, with a radio. I paid $150 for it, which was a lot at the time. I did run a few packs thru it. On different tires of course. It has since been overhauled to "never been run" condition.

bitd, my first real RC was the Tamiya Fox. I drove that car all over creation. Then, a few years later I discovered a local RC club. They ran indoor oval. I was going to buy an RC10, but just about that same time the JRX2 came out. The Losi looked like a much better car at the time (and it was) so I went with it. It was later converted into an LXT for outdoor stadium truck racing. When I went away to college, I sold all my racing stuff so I could buy a nice mountain bike to ride around on. I've still got my Fox, in parts, in a closet. I wish I still had that mountain bike. It was a 1994 Gary Fisher Aquila. Chromo totally rigid frame and perfect geometry. My friend has it and he won't sell it back to me.

I cannot remember the year that I bought mine, it had to be about age 13 or 14. Just the standard 6010 kit with a Novak ESC, Airtronics XL2P, the body of choice was the Proline Single Seater (like apexspeed wants for his Cardinal project), Proline white wheels with Schumacher Cat tires (off road) or Bolink Foams (on road). There were no dirt tracks in my hometown of Rockledge, Florida.... the LHS, SpaceCoast Raceway, set a concrete course in the parking lot and also in an industrial park not far from the store. When I wanted to go dirt racing, we went to International Supply off Sand Lake Road in Orlando. From memory, I only raced at International a couple of times, then I traded a high school buddy my RC10 for a Kyosho Optima Mid (WHY? Dunno). So it is gone. I think that buddy is still in Florida and I have thought about looking him up just in case he still has it. I was hoping that we would have showed up at our 10 year high school reunion, but he was a bit of a loner and appears to still be. I am sure that it is long gone.

Worst case, I want to do a replica.

My First R/C car was the RC10 Graphite with the 6-gear transmission - saved for months to get it. About two months after I got it Associated released the Team Car w/Stealth - Oh well, the 6-gear tranny worked pretty well. Raced it a few times but never had a LHS that could keep it's doors open for more than a few months at a time.

Of course I had dyed all the plastic parts and drilled holes in the chassis by the time I sold it to a buddy so I could buy a car stereo for my first real car - a shiny red Camaro - After I got the Camaro I spent all my money on rear tires and speeding tickets!

My current collection includes - 2 RC10 #6016 - Sealed
1 RC10 #6016 - Opened but never built
1 World's Car #6037 - Opened but never built
2 RC10 #6016 - built - never ran
1 RC10 Graphite #6030 - Built - never Ran
2 RC10 Gold Pans - Running condition
1 RC12e - Never Ran
1 Monster Gt - Running condition
??? Extra RC10 parts

1977 Camaro - Still got it - Need Motor - Currently Rusting Away
1988 Monte Carlo SS - Very Nice!!
1979 Jeep Wagoneer - Fun, Fun! - Handles jumps as good as my RC10's :D
1989 Buick Lesabre - 306,000 miles - my daily driver!

Sweet - Mine is white w/red stripes and has t-tops, aftermarket Nascar style rims painted white to match the car and the 350 out of my camaro. I just love the look of the Monte Carlo SS :D The rear tires never last as long as the front tires - does yours have the same problem? I'll have to take some pics of it later.

i got a 98 ws6.

i love the motor and looks but HATE the build quality. at 60k BABIED miles its pretty much needing a complete suspension/drivetrain rebuild.

last damn gm i'll ever own besides a corvette.

here it is, i had big plans when i first got it. but i other than the stereo i havent had time to even change the catback. if i'm ambitious enough tomorrow (and if i can warm up my tools) i'm gonna drop the tranny so i can put a new clutch in it and send the t56 out for a rebuild. (damn blocker rings went out at around 55k!) :x

Image

i love the thing, i just wish it wasnt such a poorly built pos.
