chassis refinish and to dye or not to dye

Post by JUSS10 »

alright, so i have my 10t torn all apart for clean up and I'm trying to decide what to do with the chassis. its pretty chewed up on the bottom. I'm trying to decide between: strip it and leave it bare aluminum, strip it and repaint black, or strip it and shoot it with duplicolor metalcast to make it look like blue anodized (to go with my blue RPM arms). below is a pic of the chassis as is and a few prototype tranny braces in bare aluminum and the duplicolor metal cast.

I also have a few original white parts left and I'm trying to decide if i want to dye them when i dye my new RPM tranny. I know a lot of guys say keep the white parts cause they are getting hard to find but is that as a big a deal with the 10T as it is with the RC10? all opinions welcome.

if your gonna run it, get it powdercoated... have them sandblast it before the coat. should come out nice.. reanodizing is a waste if its a runner, will come right off again. powder will hold up a little better.

honestly for cheap, strip it with yellow Easy off oven cleaner, sand bottom rough spots with medium sandpaper, then fine sandpaper, then some white scotchbrite pads with some aluminum mag polish.

should come out nice

thanks for the tip. i have some nice paint stripper that I'll use then I'll sand it out like you said. we'll see how it turns out. oh and I think i'm just going to dye the parts. they aren't the nicest. lots of scraps and what not.

paint stipper is not going to remove anodizing. it's not paint. oven cleaner is gonna be your best bet. unless you have a glass bead cabinet. or you could always send it to the guy on ebay and have it acid etched.

its sounds like oven cleaner leaves a nasty finish after it strips the anodizing, is that true?

doesnt really leave a nasty finish, it looks like crap afterwards, but its easily polished out with aluminum polish and a rag. make sure to leave it in long enough to remove the anodizing as well as the color. i have left aluminum peices in anywhere from 5 minutes to a hour. 10 min is usually long enough for a black chassis
