shock tower

Any idea when the rear shock tower was changed from a single mount to a dual mount ?

when the 6 gear C.E. came out.

actually, i was wrong. the were on the 6 gear graphite first in 89.

I bought a old orignal car today it is a "a" stamp chassis and it has dual top shock mounting holes on the rear tower and I was just trying to date the car.

the 6 gear c.e. came out in 90. does your car have the short or long front arms?

short a arms and the small 3 bolt wheels

Rear shock tower could have been changed as that was simple, just a couple of screws. Back then sometimes you changed things just to make your car look like the newer models that just came out. More shock positions could also equal better handling options.
