Those aren't welds. It's a sheet of copper coated glassfibre sheet used for circuit boards before etching. It means you can solder it together as has been used here. Some of the old ESCs has a second riser circuit board which was connected vertically to the main board using this method.

way cool, but its more likely the result of somebody with alot of time on his hands and inspiration from that pic in the magazine of the 4wd car.

Sometimes I have to much time on my hands...I might make one of these one day..anyone have some spare Optima steering hubs and carriers?
