Looking for a good, but decent proced DSLR Camera

I had to bump this, can't stop looking at the pics I posted today in the RC8Be thread here. Part of it is I really like the buggy, but also I took these in full sunlight with a camera setting group from Ken Rockwell's website with saturation and some other values cranked up a bit. Notice the Factory Team blue looks like something out of Tron, or like the parts spent time in a nuclear waste facility.

Fun to play with settings! If you haven't been to Ken Rockwell's website yet I highly recommend it as I've learned a ton.

So what exactly makes a larger more expensive digital camera superior? I was looking thru some photos today doing some organizing of thousands and thousands and noticed that a lot of them look really nice. That means that I may not need a crazy expensive camera(I know I'm overthinking this, but I'm cheap OK ). As an average user with access to enhancement software is an expensive camera worth it? That is not a rhetorical question I'd really like to know. This is un-enhanced with my second Sony Cyber Shot. I ran the first one into the dirt. Maybe 10,000 actuations easy. Screen went out. The second is still going strong after maybe that many more actuations. This photo has not been ran thru any software as far as I remember. It was taken on a walk near our house. And yes I used the joke "Honey could you step to the side? Your ass is blocking the sun." Meh, she loves it...

Looking again I can see that the picture may be a bit over-exposed? The greens could be greener, blues bluer(why do I suddenly have "What A Wonderful World" stuck in my head? ". Can't that all be fixed with software though?

Sorry for the bump, but I'm in the market. I'm not wanting to go nuts (because I'm cheap! ), but what does anyone with any knowledge think about this one? I messed around with it in the store and really liked it. It has an incredibly wide angle lens and a decent zoom. Any help is welcome. I'd probably get it in black.

I will gladly salute anyone that can offend me and that didn't even come close. Thanks! What do you think of the Samsung camera though? I'm not looking to win any awards, just want to be able to enjoy the things that I enjoy the way that I want to enjoy them... or something like that.

Lots and lots of posts here and I'll give an opinion and a dealer recomendation....

The opinion (based on about 10 years of study....)(and more than that in experience) is that you CAN'T go wrong with Canon or Nikon.... They're supported by MANY people and forums, they are repairable and they are what the 'pros' use... WHY would a 'normal' photographer want what the 'pros' use??? advice mainly.... When in my comfort zone I am very free with advice and settings for those that seem to be struggling; when I'm NOT I'm the one seeking advice from the more experienced.... BUT, the bottom line is that there is always someone using a Canon or Nikon in any shooting group and most share my desire to help others...

B & H is by FAR the most reputable and day in and day out has the best selection of USED cameras in the country. With a warrenty and an assurance that they perform as stated when they leave their facility. Buying used allows a bit more camera for the same dollars. There are lots of others; and an experienced user/buyer can probably filter out scams or substandard equipment but those just 'jumping in' should rely on a reputable dealer.

Hopefully this is helpful; yes it's a bit opinionated but I've seen all sorts of folks having mega problems when outside of this 'comfort zone'...

AND, it's certainly NOT to say that you can't take great pictures with point and shoot cameras; in some instances they are my favorites and produce excellent results...

AND, when it comes right down to it; my iPhone 4GS never ceases to amaze me with it's capabilities....

Been an unusually busy work week for me since Christmas. Finally had a little time to play with my kid and one of my new toys. Went with a simple Samsung WB100. $155 out the door. I'm very happy with it so far. Extremely comfortable, great built in effects, very wide angle lens and a nice zoom feature for a point and shoot. Look it up on youtube and it will show you all the cool stuff it can do. Just my little plug for anyone in the market.

These are a couple of 5mp(16mp takes too long from the boonies with my hotspot)pics from the same spot. Our snow fort is maybe 50-60yds away, but I'm a terrible judge of distance. Plus, my wife said "Feel free to sleep in it."

Night shot. Almost pitch black out to me. Tripod. Took roughly 7 seconds to capture this. No enhancement. First camera I've had that took good night shots. Can't wait for a non cloudy night. 16mp

^^^I just realized that the picture above looks like crap on some of the devices/computers I've looked at it on. I'm assuming it has to do with the contrast ratio of the devices. Here is a better example of the night shot feature on the camera. I need to play with it a little bit. The light reflections show up pretty well, but there is not as much contrast in the other colors as I'd like. Anyway... just so no one thinks I'm an idiot for thinking that black blob is a good night shot. (Uhh, we thought you were an idiot already...!)
