Mini Chassis options
5 months ago I got back in to RC with the purchase of the Tamiya M06 VW Bus kit. I just now learned that the Tamiya M series, is for Mini. The adjustable wheelbase for the M series is 210mm (S), 225mm (M), or 239mm (L).




A standard 1/10 Touring car has a wheelbase of 257mm. The 225mm Bus body doesn't fit them well.


I bought (3) extra Tamiya VW Bus bodies that I intend to use elsewhere, but I only now realized there is a limited selection of chassis options for the 225mm medium wheelbase that the Bus body has.


The Tamiya M05, M06, M07, and M08 all have adjustable 210mm (S), 225mm (M), or 239mm (L) wheelbase, the M05/M07 is FWD, M06/M08 RWD.

Getting ready for the 3Racing Sakura 3D M chassis.

VW Bus #2 window masks cut out today. Tamiya decal scissors are great for window masks.




Takes seven different paints to complete this, according to the instructions.


Cutting the decals out takes the longest on this model, of anything, nothing is pre-cut.

Got the window masks on Bus #2, it's ready to mask off the top half and paint the bottom.




Will get some Tamiya masking tape for that.

Put the Kyosho rally wheels on the FZ02 with the new silver screws.


Also found out the rear body mount was able to be turned upside down, and backwards, to move the mounts lower and more forward. Here's how the C10 Fleetline body was setup from Kyosho, as short as I could make it.

Much better for hiding the magnets, and will be able to put posts in there and touch the roof, should be a more solid mount overall now.


The Tribute vette that's coming up next, is also an HPI '67 vette body, and will get this chassis, so fitting it now will help get this done sooner. Going to fit the above body to the Apex2 next.

The Apex2 and FZ02S have the same height options now for the body mounts, either will work well for a custom body.

The new FZ02 rear mount is perfect now. Magnets are not fixed yet, still testing height and clearances.

Finished painting the #2 Bus body.








Came out better than #1, no mask blow by this time.

Was going to get the 3Racing Sakura 3D M kit, but realized that the Tamiya VW Bus body uses the largest chassis setting of 239mm, the 3D M only has 210mm and 225mm. Glad I figured that out before buying it.

There aren't many, if any, other choices for the 239mm Large chassis configuration, other than a Tamiya M series chassis. Went with the M08 RWD kit.

The M08 kit is more difficult to build than the M06 was, there are some modifications that require drilling and cutting away material on the chassis.


Will stop at this point and wait for the ESC and motor to get here. Went with the Tamiya Super Stock blue motor for this one.

Was nearly able to complete the chassis today. But my servo is not low profile enough, the manual recommends 17mm servo height from the bottom, to the ears of the servo.








The low profile servo I bought measures 20mm.


Choices known to fit, or 17mm:
Power HD R12-S
Protek 140T
Tamiya TSU-06

Will decide which servo, and get back to this.

Went with the Power HD R12s servo, perfect height, really fast too.

Going to have to get out the tiny scissors and cut out those body decals, this chassis is completely done and ready to run.




Went with the HPI Vintage Compound D Tires, 31mm and 26mm, to match these wheels, the tires should be here next week sometime. If I get bit by the speed bug, it's this chassis that would get a brushless setup at some point.

Got the HPI tires to match the HPI wheels today. 26mm in front, 31mm in the back.


These tires have a vintage looking side with a taller sidewall and hpi-racing written on them, that I went with here. The other side has no writing on it, and appears to be very low profile with a very short sidewall. I may turn the tires around for the low profile look at some point.






Not sure about the all black rims just yet, may try to paint the wheels to match the body, but sometimes that can look too busy. Also have chrome Alclad II. Need to test the spare wheels to see what's possible.

I really need to make myself cut and mount the decals, it's a real chore on this model with all of those windows, but I love the detail of this body kit, just wish the window masks and decals were pre-cut.
