Your top 10 picks for most influential, must have R/Cs
Was reading the post about the dominator, and someone chimed in about in not being on their top list, and got me thinking about what your opinions are on the most influential, and must have r/c's of history, and maybe a reason or so why. Think it will be pretty neat to see how everyones lists compare. I'll start, not putting much thought into it, since I am need to go to bed, but we will see where it goes. Keep in mind I'm 30, so don't reach back to the early roots of r/c but been into it since the age of 8 or 9, so some will be my must have/wants of that period.
Most influential in close but maybe not exact order from most to least
whatever got the whole r/c gig going that started it all
tamiya sand scorcher/rough rider seems to be 1 of the first off road purpose built
clodbuster one of the first monster trucks I can think of, has been extremely popluar for years, many kits/aftermarket based off it
grasshopper/hornet many peoples first kits/hobby grade car
gold tub rc10 was the r/c racer to have seem to me to one that really got r/c offroad competition going, another seemed like everyone had one cars
blackfoot I don't know how many of these they sold, but seemed like everyone had one when I was a kid.
jrx2 sparked some competition in the r/c racing scene, and a rivalry still going.
og t-maxx I feel it started the nitro m/t rtr craze with the ez start, instant gratification, 2 speed with reverse, out of a nitro car.
losi mini-t Got the ball rolling on the 1/18 scale, clone down what you already have selling craze.
traxxas slash as much as I hate to admit it I don't know of any other truck that has sparked so many spinoffs from other manufacturers, classes, and been as fast growing as what this truck has done in a couple years. The local hobby shop has sold more of them than anything else they carried combined last year.
I don't remember what car really started the touring car craze, seems hpi rs4, shortly after tc3, those hold a pretty big part in there as well. I know tamiya had been making scale apearing, road cars for a good while but something around the time of those two caused touring to really take off.
Now for the must have list, this is from a runner, get out an play with list, not a shelf queen list. Again my personal world I am sure these will vary vastly.
Sand Scorcher/ Rough Rider
An og Tamiya 3 speeder
A gold tub
A Clod Buster
1/5 scale gas burner of some sort a 5b sure is a fun one
Vanessa's Lunch Box
A micro T just to run around in the living room
A big nasty 1/8 brushless truck
I like running a short course truck, not necessarily a slash, but like the looks/handling of a sc truck
tc3 cheap, plentiful, brushless rockets.
Well there's mine, I don't know how satisfied I am with the must have list but for the time I have right now it will work. Now chime in and lets see your list!

That's a pretty good list, although I think that the traxxas stampede should be included in that. It was a huge improvement in monster truck handling when it came out, and still proves to be an extremely good truck.

suprised that there are no 1/8 scale nitro on road cars or 1/12 scale on road cars mentioned? I would think an RC12 would be right up there?

Re: Your top 10 picks for most influential, must have R/Cs
I guess it kinda depends on where you grew up, and what was raced around you as to what you see as influential. For me 1/8 and 1/12 were pretty much non existent around here, so guess I didn't really give them much thought. Kinda like the ta01 starting the touring craze, it may have somewhere else, but around here it really seemed to "boom" around the time of the introduction of the tc3. Up to that point everyone just ran a 1/10 buggy with a stock car body, then one winter everyone shows up with a touring car. I would like to clarify from the title of the thread, I meant 2 different list, what you feel were most influential, and ones you feel are must haves for one reason or another. I know there are some more opinions out there, lets see some list!

Re: Your top 10 picks for most influential, must have R/Cs
the 1/12 scale stuff I see as some of the most influential, and the 1/8 came along right before that but I know nothing of 1/8 on road. The main thing I see is that is where the competition started, it all trickles down from competition on the track. So for my list I'll go with:junkman wrote:I guess it kinda depends on where you grew up, and what was raced around you as to what you see as influential. 1) 1/8 scale on road from the past (I don't know what was the brand that sparked it so it's blank)
2) 12e & 12i
3) Rough Rider/Scorcher, arguably the first to put the masses on the dirt
4) RC10
5) RC10T who didn't feel the fever the fist time they saw the moo truck?
6) insert first touring car here (again, something I know little about)
7) Clodbuster

9) slash
10) tamiya falcon (this is what started my influence so I feel it should be on my list!)

ax10, yup I dropped the ball on that one. I'd say between crawler and short course probably 1/2 or better of r/c sales last year. Off now to find the other thread, hadn't seen it.

Re: Your top 10 picks for most influential, must have R/Cs
By no means do I hope to offend anyone, but:
Here's my 2 cents:
1. Tamiya Sand Scorcher: grandfather of true scale R/C off road, multiple spin offs)...Check eBay in awhile?..$$$$ So good they had to bring it back from the grave.
2. RC10 (original): Took full scale off road racing tech & made it work in 10th scale..reliably
3. Tamiya Frog: (How many spin offs?...hmm, Blackfoot, Monster Beetle, Lancia, Brat, Mud Blaster...) In a way, it started the truck craze.
4. Kyosho Ultima: The Anti-RC10.....Like Coke vs. Pepsi, Chevy vs. Ford..(or maybe Toyota?) great off roader with a shelf life almost as long as the original RC10..probably the best suspension design of the day, too bad Kyosho ignored the obsolete transmission for years.. Now it's design lives on as HPI's Baja.
5. Losi JRX2: Added an innovative transmission that forced other manufacturers to re-think their designs. Props for attempting a unique rear suspension design. Also ushered in the "graphite" decade...48 pitch internals & a clutch.
6. JRXT: Made everyone jump on the (production) Bigfoot looking stadium truck band wagon when people got tired of dumping money into their Blackfoots & Monster Beetles.
7. Kyosho Inferno: Where would 4x4 1/8th scale off road or the ugly-ass Truggies be today if it wasn't for this "what the hell kind of car is that" look that was designed years ago. Oddly enough, didn't this chassis inspire the USA 1 & an 1/8th stadium truck years ago?...Hmm, Traxxas T-Maxx & Associated SC8 anyone?
8. Tamiya Hornet: Makes you feel kind of sorry for Tamiya. Probably one of the simplest designs for multiple manufacturers to rip off in the 80's. Even Traxxas ripped them off with "The Cat" back in the day.
9. Axial Scorpion: Probably one of the most unique vehicle designs on the market, it started a completely new form of R/C.
10. Traxxas Slash: "The look" finally caught on. Tamiya tried a scale stadium truck years ago that didn't hit. Losi & Associated couldn't get away from the big and bouncy tire look. With their Desert truck, Losi missed the boat. Now they have The Strike (which looks like a Radio Shack toy). Associated is obsessed with making contiuously weaker products and rushed the SC10 to market. The Slash nearly perfected value, with a bomb proof product that looks great & goes fast. Now everyone but Tamiya is ripping them off!
