Brushless ESC with older radio, may be a dumb question

I read earlier in the thread about the Novak Havoc problems one member had with running a brushless system with an older radio.

Is glitching a common problem with running a brushless set up with an older radio (non 2.4ghz)

I am wanting to buy a brushless combo and I don't have the money right now for a 2.4ghz radio and the brushless system.

Any issues I need to be concerned with? I would love to hear from anyone who has run the brushless/AM-FM radios.

I had problems with my Havoc speed control only. Novak ended up sending me a new speed control. I use an older Airtronics XL2P AM radio with it and it works great.

i cant use my velineon with any CF or graphite chassis iv tried every thing and i cant aford to run any more cars into my chainlink fence its the samee with my futaba magnum and my kyosho perfex

i know the chassis conduct and have made every effort to insulate i dont have any problem with brushed esc

I am not sure on your budget for the 2.4ghz radio but their are some good ones out their not crazy expensive. I am in the hunt to get a new radio and brushless system before the end of the year as well.

$.02. I run Castle systems on the cheapest AM radios you can immagine with no problems.

Anyone else with input is appreciated. I have a Futaba FM radio that work flawlessly and really don't want to upgrade right now (keeping me from being in the dog house). I may end up finding a solid brushless combo and going from there. If I run into any problems I will just have to readjust I guess.

i love my velineon its water proof and has loads of power it never seems to get hot i have 5000s and like my handbrake turns i never cleaned it and probably never will will see what a hot summer will do when i run it on hot black top

I was the one that ran into problems with my Havoc. I was running an old Futaba Magnum Sport and even tried a Junior.

When I spoke with Novak regarding the problem they said it could be bad software on the speed controller. Before sending it back I tried a new(out of a SC10) Am radio and it worked great.


I purchased a TowerHobbies 224 radio for $79.00, not because I needed a 2.4 radio, but because it was cheap and I wanted to give it a try. Very happy with it by the way.

So far I like it. I have not taken it to the track yet, but it worked great at my local park. I was able to drive it farther than I could see without any issues.

I run an older (now) Novak super sport 5800 with a futaba am in my 10t with no problems. I haven't gone for any distance runs, but it reached 400 feet just fine.

Running EXII and EX5 KO 27MHZ on Tekin RS pro and hobbywing 120A BL Systems, no problem so far. unless i get into a situation that i have no choice, thats the time i will upgrade...

You could always try a switch mode UBEC like a lot of RC plane and heli guys use. Usually have a 5v or 6v option and can deliver 3 amps or more.

I run an old Futaba Pistol radio, and I've NEVER had any problems of any sort while running my EZRun brushless combos, and none of my racing mates have had any issues either. Go for it mate, you shouldnt have any hassles...
