Post by justinspeed79 »

What is the best (easily available) lube to use in the six gear transmission? Thanks. :)

dextron III

the only thing i lube in a 6 gear trans is a little asc black grease on the thrust washers on the topshaft. i've never lubed the gears in a stock or a stealth trans. but that's just me. you could probably use a little asc green slime if ya wanted to, i would guess.

I don't lube the stealth trannys either, but I thought lubing the six gear was mandatory? Won't the metal gears get chewed up with no lube?

In the 6-gear, I always used a touch of "White Lithium Grease", on the gears and all shafts in the trans.

The Stealth needs no gear lube, just make sure the bearings are always clean and lubed. (Before I get scolded, the diff needs to be clean, lubed, and adjusted properly. The same goes for the slipper.)

Do not lube the gears.

Metal to nylon gear contacts don't need lube. The only gearboxes you will ever need grease in are ones that have metal to metal gear contacts. Using lubes on the gears in the RC10 gearbox only attracts dirt and adds drag and resistance to the drivetrain.

Associated never suggested putting any type of grease anywhere but the diff balls and thrust washers.

You don't need it.

Thanks guys. Sorry, I should have been more informative in my original post, I have a tranny that has all metal gears. What lube can I use that won't hurt any of the plastic or anything else in the transimission. I have a all metal tranny for one of my GT's and I use lithium based automotive grease in it. It works extremely well, but I wasn't sure if it I should use it with the the older stuff and especially white parts.

I've had good luck running them dry in the past, however in the last few i rebuilt i put green slime on the thrust bearing and a very light machine oil on the 6 gears...most of the oil spins off but they stay wet and it seems to run very smooth...and i dont have probs with dirt getting in as its a pretty good seal. My cousin has actually ran the case with maybe an teaspoon or two of oil in it and sealed the two halves together...like a wet sump.... 8)
